Well, a HEST went up F/S on the Forum, so I snatched it up. I believe it's one of the early ones as it has the oval shaped scales & no skull on it. Not a big deal, but I'm impressed.

Unlike many here, I actually preferred the RAT3 vs the RC3 because of its size. However, because I have large hands, the RAT3 isn't as comfortable as it could be W/O using the choil. Well, the HEST takes care of that. There's no choil, but that's OK & I can get a full grip on it W/O any issues. My hand fits right in between the finger guard by the blade & the pry bar, but again, that's OK.

The blade on this is big enough, for a personal FB, it's light, & I like the thickness of the blade. It's not too thick, but definitely is "tough" thick.

Now I just need to get an Izula.

Congrats on getting the HEST, great knife, eh? I just got one from the Pass around and will be writing up a review this weekend on it. :)

Welcome to the addiction :)

Glad you are enjoying the blade! And I'm afraid I have to disagree with TTD... Post many pics, not just one :D

Post some pics of your knives. There will be many more to follow, one more is never enough!

The HEST is a awesome blade, although I have only used it for the time being. I can tell it will perform.. (It IS a Rat Cutlery produced blade, is it not?)

For those of you who have a HEST: does the prybar ever get in the way? It is the one feature that has made me hesitant to picking up a HEST. CL01, I'd definitely be interested in what you think as you are getting used to it. MrCoffee: looking forward to your review.

soon and very soon I will own a HEST!! I said I would hold off till next year, but then HEST came out and then the Forum knife,Damm you RAT for being so awsome!!!

That is a ? for me too...

I don't find that it gets in the way-plus side I'm not using the knife tip for prying anymore !!! I have a drawer full of folders with broken tips.I need to get in the shop and grind them down. :o

Congrats. I have broken many a knife tip and I always wondered why they didn't include a pry bar. You asked about the "hest being a RAT product. Jeff, Mike and his crew are exactly the kind of people I like traveling with and doing business with. We also share a passion for simple, tough, made in America products that do exactly what they are advertised to do.

The official name of the knife is the RAT DPx H•E•S•T© which is Randall Adventure and Training, Dangerous Places, Xtreme, Hostile Environment Survival Tool. But Hest is find since it has an old english double meaning. It means "command" which is exactly what happens if somebody needs to told to leave by your HEST in a back alley at 4am. :))

The knife was my idea, developed in conjunction with Jeff, Mike, Shon and people who gave me their opinion of the prototype. Then we agreed the knife should be a good value pricewise and be a lifetime companion. That means a lot in today's 90 day guarantee, stay on hold, argue with Lashwonda who accuses you of breaking it, bullshit world of disposable products.

I would love to see a leather sheath since I get a lot or requests for one. Leather is useless in the jungle and will rust the hell out of your poor knife...but it looks old school cool!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! That has to be one of the funniest lines I have ever read...

The HEST certainly is a sweet tool, and I look forward to the HEFT.

I am no kydex fan, but think it is justifiable for the EDC or companion carry that is used with this small knife. I will always be a cordura nylon nut. And don't worry about the old style finish, it doesn't last long anyway ;)

I like the pry bar on the pommel like it is, however I did find that I had to get used to it. For me, it kind of "anchors" in my hand on the grip.

I was impressed by it because the blade's pretty close to the length of my RAT3, but thicker & the handle's more comfortable. I can't compare it to a RC3, because I've never handled/used one.

This is my 6th or so RAT, but my 1st Rowen made RAT Cutlery knife.

This one also has the oval scales & no skull, so I guess I'll have to post a pics, huh?

Could it be a pre production model??? Prototype???

I know the main pic of the DPx H•E•S•T on the RAT website does not show the skull on the handle. Could the non skull handle be the "regular" production model and the ones with the skull be the limited edition models with the serial numbers???

Well, that's a good question. Mine doesn't have a serial # & no skull, but the scales are ovals. The don't have the flat part extending towards the blade like on RAT's website. I'm told it was 1 of 3 or so giveaways at Blade.

Thanks for the post, RYP. Reading the story told by one of the designers/creators gives the knife a special meaning. That's a big part of what makes this forum such a great club.
