I have talk to pepole that hve hunted russian boar with knifes. It's starting to sound like a cool idea. What do you all think.

I saw it in the “Lost”, cool. May be better to try a wolverine, it is sound even more exciting.
By the way, what is suicide rate in that part of Russia?

That is too muy macho for this boy. If a firearm is not an option, I'd go with a spear, as in medieval times.

But I'd get a real vicarious thrill out of hearing about it. If I had to kill a boar with a knife, the Temperance would be a good choice.

Please post pictures along with your narrative. I just hope you don't end up as a candidate for the Darwin Awards.

I guess it depends on the boar's size and how many dogs hang on the boar prior to the kill ...
Killing a boar with a knife is doable if you have a good pack of dogs IMO. Not the easiest option tohugh :)

It is pretty common to hunt wild pigs with dogs and kill them with a knife.

But, there is no Spyderco Model that I would use for Sticking a hog.

Didn't Jerry Busse once make a hog sticker?

Eastr77, what you want for that sort of hunt is a rather lage and heavy duty knife and, finew knives that Spydercos are, they are not designed for pig-sticking. There are or were members of BladeForums who have hunted boars with knives down South and I am merely reflecting what they have posted in that regard.

I have been on 2 boar hunts before but with a gun once with 44 and once with 480 the Russian was kill with 3 shots from the 480 at about 15 yards after 2 shoots to the heart it was still trying to charge. That was when my guide asked when i would come back and try it with a knife i told him never he says it very exciting but i don't know. The other boar was a ark. raz. Russian mix it took 5 dogs and 2 heart shots. But from what i've seen dogs don't slow the boars down much when they are spooked. It would have to be wore down a bunch before that kind of close quarters could be preformed. Didn't know if the temp could reach the vital for the kill or not.

Tom Krein just got back from a Hog Hunt with other knifemakers where they used knives to dispatch the Hogs. Recommended blade length was between 7-9 inches. Stated reason was long enough to reach the Hogs vitals, but not too long to over-penetrate and possibly stab one of the catch dogs.

As such the Temperance falls a bit short in blade length. That just means you have to wait for one of the Hossum's for a Hog blade.

i would use something like an old bayonet, it would be long enough and if ya stick it and the hog runs and gets away ya dont lose an expensive knife, i'd do this until i'd killed a few and got it down anyway before i used an expensive knife.

i dont think a spyderco temp would be long enough, in this case longer is better imho.

maybe something like a busse bowie ...............

Hey Guys....

Yaa a little tooooo violent for me...

I'll shoot them,, but could never stab one to death, unless it needed to be done..
I however don't put anyone else down for doing it..

The Ferhman Hood Hunter 10 would be Absolutely ideal for the job...

You want a long, sturdy thin blade,, like a WWI bayonet would be ideal..

Have fun and watch those tusks!!

BTW..
I want to take one of these beasts with my Exocet Crossbow...

one of my buds hunts them with bows, has killed some big ones FWIW, i prefer a .30-o6' myself lol.

This thread sounded like madness when I first read it, but apparently it is fairly common? We didn't have any boars, only Grizzlies and Moose in the danger department where I grew up. How in the heck do you get close enough to stab a boar to death without getting tusked from a-hole to elbow?

The key to Hog Hunting with a knife is the use of Catch Dogs! They are what make it possable and are the most enjoyable part of the hunt!!

It truely is not that violent in my opinion. It is a very humane way to dispatch a Hog! I have not personally witnessed an animal die any quicker!!

Well do the dogs catch it and hold it for you? Then do you stab it in the heart or what? I am not horrified or anything just curious as I had never heard of it before. Bullets and arrows yes, but not knives :o

I clicked on your link; some fine steel to be had for prizes...but no info on how the hunting part works. What sort of dogs work best? Basically anything you feel like talking about is of interest. Thanks.

As a rule the dogs run it half to death. when it is so tired that it d:cool dosn't want to run the dogs bite on and you move in but I have seen them get up from 2 hits with a 480 and try to subdo the attacker and the dog get tossed aside like toys when the hog say time to get out here. so you can't depend on the dogs to save you but they like to grab it by the nose and back leg and pull diffrent ways makes it very hard for the hog to move.:cool:They like to use pit bulls for bite work and hounds for the runnig down once the hounds tire it you have pits with kevlar on go in and bite on.hen you suck it up and take your turn if you dare these are very inpresive animals they have about a 6 foot vert when on the run I've heard storys of them jumping on the hunter rite as they are dyeing and they way between 200 and 400 lbs try that landing on you when it's hurt and mad

Oh so you release the hounds then run after them through the forest until the hog tires; then close in for an eye to eye personal kill. That should let you know you are alive! Sounds bloody exciting!

I have a pair of Temperance...Plain-edge, and serrated. I can't see taking on a WILD boar with one of 'em...I'd want at-least my Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie for THAT job.

The Trailmaster is a very good choice for Hog Hunting! Especially if the clip has been reground thinner so it can be sharpened. I have reground a bunch of them for this purpose!
