I'm not a collector but do have a small unintentional collection. Have been cleaning and lubing and sharpening them the past few evenings and noticed that all my knives are USA made. That wasn't intentional but a lifetime of carrying Case and Buck and Queen and Leatherman ended up that way. One small SAK is the exception. I've tried a few Kershaws and Gerbers and CRKTs because I liked the look but they always get given away. I guess my only rule is USA made. What about you?

I also did an inventory the other day and was surprised. Mostly US-made blades: ZT, Hinderer, Three Rivers, and Lone Wolf. I always thought I would wind up mostly acquiring Taichung-made Spydercos, or knives from the newer super-quality mainland Chinese brands, but apparently US ingenuity won out. :) Gotta say I'm happy about it.

I’ve started imposing a “no duplicates” rule on myself: I only buy knives that fill a specific niche that my other knives do not - and if a new one fills a niche better, I sell the old one.

This has kept me at a pretty steady number of knives since early this year. It also happens to be the exact number of knives that fit in my dresser-top organizer’s pull-out drawer, which I suppose is a new rule for myself: no more than 6 modern folders.

This will also force me to refine my collection a bit as well. I’ll probably sell my Vallotton since it’s so nice I never feel comfortable carrying it, and it’s basically just dead weight taking up a slot that could be occupied by something I might actually use like everything else in the organizer.

Nothing made in China or Taiwan, nothing over $200 and most importantly I don't buy any knife that I won't use. IMO a knife is a tool and is made to be used, if it's just going to sit in a drawer to be looked at and polished then I don't buy it.

Rule #1: Don't drop your knife
Rule #2: Don't cut on media that is harder than your blade
Rule #3: Avoid rocks and staples
Rule #9: Always carry a knife

- No garbage, no clones, no cheapos
- Knife should be of good steel, premium steel if at all possible
- Knife should add to the collection, fill a hole/void in the collection
- Stay away from knives that you cannot thrust and cut/slice with (No more leaf blades. I have two and that's enough.)
- Nothing over $10,000 (for now) :D
- Buy investement grade knives.
- BUY Z-WEAR, Rex 121, M390/20CV/204P, Maxamet, M4, ZDP189, S90V, CTS-XHP, 3V, D2(Bob Dozier)
