Got any "Stackers" in here? i.e. Silver Hoarders...

I've been interested in coins for as long as I can remember, and collected quite a bit during my high-school years. More recently I started with the Silver Proof sets from US Mint with the state quarters, and the American Silver Eagles. I've always carried a large silver coin in my watch pocket, either a Morgan, Peace, or ASE, just as a conversation piece or something to keep my fingers busy. (I've gotten good a walking it across my knuckles, which the kids think is cool.)

Lately I've seen Silver Rounds being released by private mints with unique and intersting designs, usually based on a popular coin design. I picked up a few different ones this year, and am enjoying searching ebay and other places for others. I didn't realize there was actually a culture out there of "Stackers" who hoard silver and gold for teotwawki situations where the US gov't is gone, and paper money becomes worthless.

I, myself, don't necessarily believe that will happen, but I have given it the "what if" scenario think-through, and can see the value of thinking along those lines. Maybe I should post in the Wilderness and Survival subforum.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else out there is into this sort of thing. I can post a few pics of items I've collected, to start it off.

Post your thoughts and/or pictures, if you'd like. I have a few actualy "legal tender" coins, including the ASE, a Maple Leaf, and a Mexican Libertad, plus a few unique bullion rounds.

Hi Dan. I 've always enjoyed coins for their artistic beauty and symbolism. Like you, I carry an ASE in my watch pocket to remind me when American coins were actually worth something of value and represented the ideals on which this country was founded. Unfortunately, I don't have enough money to be a "stacker" if I were inclined to, but I am still able to appreciate a coin's beauty. The design used on the ASE is simply classic, as is the design from the Double Eagle used on the Mint's current AGE (wayyyy out of my price range). Certainly the high-water mark for American coin design. There's a few international designs that have piqued my interest as well: England's Britannia Design, for example, with the coin's reverse personifying England and it's rich naval traditions. I also like Austria's Philharmonic design, just as something of a departure from the usual politician/famous person design. I think England just started issuing the Britannia is .999% Ag this year (rather than sterling)...I'd need to double-check that. One private silver round minting I'd like to acquire is one of the original NORFED Liberty Dollars. There's currently a new minting available with a few changes in design so as not to run afoul of the Treasury Dept. I've been kicking around the idea of starting a collection for my baby daughter, trying to acquire a different silver bullion coin from each country. Fortunately, I've got some time to get it done.

I had about 30 Morgan Dollars from 1899 and 1885. Some scumbag broke into my old home while I was out of town and stole them all, along with some other stuff. That was about 12 years ago. I have about 10 American Silver Eagle coins. We get them through work, 1 per anniversary year. I was going to try and get me some 10ounce silver stackers.

Hey Rev, I'm sure there's people out there who like coins, but honestly, any true PM "stacker" isn't going to tell ANYONE, even online!!! Remember: Uncle Sam's watching.....

I think it's great that your company awards everyone an ASE every year. Sorry to hear that your collection of Morgans was ripped off (I'm surprised to find any common thieves who would even know they had value above "One Dollar"). My grandmother recently sent me a Morgan Silver Dollar; this one is a common 1921 minting and has been circulated, so its not worth much more than melt value. Personally, I prefer the design of the "newer" Peace Dollar. I've heard that Morgans weren't very popular in their time and could still be found in banks as late the 1960's. They might not be as pretty as some other coins but they sure sound sweet when you drop them on a table! :D

I sold most of my silver when it peaked a while back. I'll start buying more when it drops under $20. I suspect that will be soon.

I really wouldn't rate myself as a stacker, as I have only about 13 Troy oz. of bullion. I don't count the Proof ASE's, as those have more value than silver content, but if TSHTF, I guess it would work. Collectible silver coins make up the bulk of my investment, and probably don't hold much more value than what I paid. Though, if it came down to it, I could sell it all off and make a house payment, or two.

As far as I know, which isn't much, I thought physical silver and some gold coins were un-reportable, and therefore any gains would be free of capital gains tax. Someone correct me, if I'm wrong.

I've got a couple. I carry a 1 oz. '95 walking liberty, a '39 walking liberty half dollar, and a $10 gold piece in case I ever need to horse trade when I'm out and about. I've got a lil' silver stashed away.

Fun thing, take a silver coin and some grains of chipped dry ice. Set the coin on top of the dry ice on a hard table, and listen to it sing!

Okay, my nerd is showing...:D

How funny! I was just searching for a silver collecting or stacking forum to join and decided to come here and ask if any of my fellow BF forumites already belonged to a good one, only to find that someone had started a thread about stacking!

I decided about a year ago to start adding some physical silver and gold to my overall retirement/college/teotwawki plan. I've got some silver (and a little bit of gold) in various and diverse bullion and coinage sizes locked in my safe with the guns and ammo. I put part of my paycheck into my 401(k), part into my employee stock purchase, and part into buying some silver. I might buy some more gold at bonus time next year.

I think the Peace dollar is a very beautiful coin as well as the ASE. I just don't like the markup over the spot price vs. a plain bullion round. From a pure stacking standpoint, I want the most bang for the buck.

Do you guys have any good sources that you buy from? I usually buy from APMEX on eBay.

You missed that drop by about a month or so. It was $18 ish in June and July. Now it's on the upswing.

Hold tight: if/when the stock market crashes again, silver and gold will follow as everything is liquidated to raise/preserve cash (see 2007).

I loved collecting coins when I was a kid. I had some silver maple leaf coins and a really nice silver dollar that my uncle gave me but my mom ended up pawning them when my parents split up.

One of the few things I had that held any sort of sentimental value.

I've wanted to get back into collecting silver coins again but I too worried about them getting stolen.

No place in my condo right now to bolt down a safe into the floor.

I had a bit over 500 oz. in 2003. It sat at less than $4 for years, so when I moved to AZ I sold most of it. It would be worth a lot more now, but that's the way it goes.
I have about 15 oz. in misc. coins and 1 oz. bars.
