im in northwest arkansas and i would desperately love to have a grinder with some guts for a decent price, and when i say decent i mean dirt cheap

also need a bandsaw, portable or otherwise but something that goes slow for sure

hmm lets see, what else, ive got a hf 1x30, got a hf 1/3 hp drill press, need a heat treat oven, need a saw, need a grinder, need a surface grinder....i think, need steel, need pins, need handle material, need more time to work on knives, need a bench or table, well other than that it looks like ive got a good start heh heh.......donations welcome!

something ive been workin on for awhile now, a good long while, oh yeah i need some new belts too

If you can't swing a Coote, get the Sears Craftsman 2x42 belt sander. Very inexpensive and a lot of guys on this site use or have used it to make some nice knives.

im lustin after a kmg or dozier, but honestly i think the kmg is more versatile, consider this if i mount a variable speed 1.5 hp motor on a table behind my grinder and use a step pulley on the motor i would have a perfect spot to run a belt over to a bandsaw and have a variable speed bandsaw i think it could be a pretty sweet setup, and i think i could build a bandsaw from used parts and plate steel that would be much more approprate for what we do than anything you can buy for less than 1200 or 1500 bucks, and i think i can build it for 200 bucks, since i would already have the motor with step pulley i believe this would be my best bet

but for now i think im gonna try to find a dewalt portaband, they are pretty cheap on ebay 200-250 with shipping

but let me know if anybody has got a decent drinder for cheap

dude craigslist is your friend

I have made every knife to date on a 1x30 belt sander with a cheapo Harbor Frieght angle grinder to cut the profile and begin the bevels

Just build yourself one of these. Thanks to Tracy I just finished this one. Once I saw the plans and got started I thought these machines are really simple. Otherwise the 2"X 48" grinders are a pretty good starter and can always be used. Kinda fast speed tho.

Build the No Weld Grinder from Tracey. Going from a 1/2 hp multitool to this grinder has completely changed my whole knifemaking process! I can't recommend it enough. I probably have about $400 into mine but I had to buy everything.

I'd second that. When I built one of those my skin cleared up and girls started calling me...and I'm 51! :D

Matt, that's great to hear it's working out for you. Send me a knife pic when you can...

Jared,

Another vote for the Coote! Norm is a heck of a guy and makes a great product.

I've been running mine for Kydex and steel for a bit over 7 years and have had no issues. I do suggest buying some sheaves (got mine at Grainger) which make it speed adjustable for about $30.
