The Norwegians have been doing the same thing for a long, long time.
And their blade's are still outstanding!!!!
CrazyCrow.com has the Norwegian blades for sale that just need a guard (optional) and a handle and sheath or scabbard.
And they're very reasonable on their prices for them.
I have a Finish Puukko that is made with the hard center.

Now that you mention it that makes sense. I heard it actually from a friend that knows alot about fencing and Euopean swords. I thought it made sense but I figure are right now that I think of it.
