Got it narrowed down to either G10 Dragonfly or Cat

I've been looking for a Spydie with a blade less than 2.5" and was set to buy a G10 Dragonfly and along comes the Cat. They are very close in size but both unique in materials and looks. On one hand you have some awesome G10 and a lockback and on the other S30V and some decent CF scales (which I've yet to add to my collection). I know both will serve my purpose, but the "Taiwan thing" bothers me a tad, but not enough to nix the deal. It does look like the Cat will disappear just a tad better in the pocket. Here is what will most likely be the deciding factor - What makes the G10 Dragonfly worth $30+ more?

well i would get the cat, it has the S30V and CF. also taiwan is a westernized capitalist democracy, and they oppose china. i dont mind buying knives from them if they are good. so i would get the cat and save yourself $30. :D

A year from now you won't remember or miss that $35 difference, so you might want to get the one you like the most. For me that would be the Dragonfly, but thats purely subjective.

I suspect that the cost difference is primarily attributable to supply/demand, as the Dragonfly is a well-established and respected member of the Spydie stable and the Cat is not, but there may be some materials & machining costs factored in there too.

Always remember too that I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I sort of look at the G10 Dragonfly as a "Little Cousin" to my Para D2. Very well thought out, great materials and proven. Of course I share the same disposition and don't have a clue either! :D

Listen, my dad has gotten by for 80 years just fine with one pocket knife at a time. We would be hard-pressed to demonstrate that we need more than one. We mostly buy these things to fire off the pleasure neurons in the remote recesses of our brains. So analyzing steels and blade profiles and locks is fine and dandy, but feeling good what its all about. So get the one that best does that.

I have both. Both feel good in the hand due to the thumb ramp and finger choils. The DF wins in the size department but the Cat has better blade steel. I think it depends on what you are going to use it for. If you'll be doing a lot of cutting the Cat would be better because of the slightly bigger handle and longer edge retention. If its more for the pocket with intermittent use I think the DF may be more appropriate.

Yes, the neverending search for the one we will take with us...

That's such a close call, I'll recommend you buy both and sell your least favorite.

I've heard that the fit and finish of the G10 Dragonfly ranks with the best of all of Spyderco's offerings. Compare that with the Cat which has had a number of QC issues. If the $30 isn't a huge deal, I'd recommend the G10 Dragonfly.

Man, seems like it's hard to go terribly wrong!

I have the g10 dragonfly and it is a great knife. Don't know about the cat, but you can't go wrong with the dfly.

I just ordered the Cat hoping it's as nice as my Sage-1. If it's anything close to that, I'll be happy.

....or do I just go ahead and get the Sage while I can? I got a feeling there will be plenty of Cats for a while. Too many Spydies and too little monies.

Just ordered a new Sage. I can always get the Cat later if I feel the desire. The polished look and great CF was too much to pass up! Knowing my personality I would be polishing every nook & cranny on the Cat and maybe that will be a nice project later on.

That Dragonfly is a realy tempting knife for me, although they are close in size and looks the cat isnt tempting att all for me. So if it was me I would obwiously by the Dragonfly. But the hassle geting one of those here to Östersund.....

Good choice on the Sage. It is definitely finished better than the Cat and the carbon fibre looks and feels better as well.

If you compare the Cat directly to either the Sage or the G-10 DF, you will be a bit disappointed. Granted that the Cat can be polished up to something near the Sage's quality, it takes work on your part to get it so. There are a few things you can't fix easily:

The CF scales on the Cat are not as good as the ones on a Sage. With the dull finish, it lacks the deep contrasting coloration on a high quality CF. And when polished, you have none of the grippy texture offered by the Sage.

Even though the Cat has decently smooth opening and closing action after some cleaning, the Sage still feels better than the Cat. The difference between phosphor bronze bushings and teflon bushings can be felt and to me it seems to add to the side to side play later.

Every G-10 scaled knife from Spyderco has had better fit and finish than what I've seen on the Cat. I'm only talking about a small difference, but it's there.

SO true... about knives and other hobbies that many of us engage in.... firearms, flashlights... yeah. I've got waaay more guns, flashlights, and knives than I really need. One great gun, one great flashlight, and one great knife is likely to be all that is truly needed. But it's so much dang fun comparing, analyzing, planning, shopping, acquiring, sharing, using, and admiring. ;)

The Sage makes a great overall knife... small and light enough to be a nice EDC and large enough to handle light to moderate duty. Awesome design, materials, fit, & finish. A wonderful knife to have and enjoy.

My choice for a smaller companion to my Sage 1 was also between the G10 Dragonfly and the Cat and in the end, I decided on the G10 Dragonfly because I was more confident in it being of overall higher quality. The difference in blade steels won't make any difference to me in my relatively light use of the knife. Like you, I figured I could watch the Cat mature and settle in a little bit before ultimately picking one up for myself. My G10 Dragonfly will be here Monday, if not tomorrow, from Spydieguys. I'm looking forward to receiving this much-loved and highly regarded little blade.
