After some creative trading I finally got my hands on a Lava. Ive carried it for about a week now and I think I can give my initial impressions and share some thoughts in general.
One of the reasons I was interested in a Lave is because of the 2.5 inch maximum blade length law in Chicago where I often work. The lava falls well under that so I hope to carry it without interference from the good folks of the Chicago PD.
Finding a small blade with a decent sized handle was another thing that put the Lava high on my have to have list. I have large hands and most Chicago legal blades that I have seen have tiny toy handles. No toy handles on my tools thank you very much.
When it first arrived I tested all the different grips and they are all comfortable and secure. Lucky for me that I cut my thumb in the process because then I didn't have to do any sharpness testing. Its sharp. Trust me and my sorry thumb. :thumbdn:
I hardly had time to bandage my thumb when it was off to take the kids to practice. You know how hard it is to have a new knife to play with and to be surrounded by non-knife nuts? I did manage to pull it a few times, every time having a little nagging feeling that something was not right about how it came out of my pocket which is when I noticed the clip was set up for lefty carry. Went to my truck got some tools and switched it around. Lost one of the clip screws in the grass. Serves me right for being so impatient. :grumpy:
Ive had it with me every day since. The blade locks up tight and centers when closed. The lock itself is strong and not too hard to release. The blade has held its edge though all the box opening, food preparation and pumpkin plant pruning. Pumpkin plants dont know when to quit. Overall I would say that the Lave is well built and really very useful.
The only problem I have with it is that the stainless handle is slippery. Some G-10 inserts or something to improve the grip would be nice.
I did get a Kona , Meercat and a Salsa in the same trade. Maybe one of these days I will put the lava down and try one of those out
