Got me a shotgun.

Chopsticks,
I don't know on the 870. I've seen those sights on Ithaca 37 Riot guns before, and there was drilling involved. I'd talk to someone like Brownells, as they not only sell all that stuff, but are able to handle any questions on their products without having to "get back to you." :)

lcs37, Yep, I saw that article a little while ago. He says they're external cocking levers as opposed to actual hammers on the Baikal. Once again, this is probably just fine, and would probably keep working handed down to your grandkids, I just like my hammers to be actual hammers. Wish he'd put a bigger picture in there so we could see them side by side...

"For 2003, we have taken the IZH43K and made the cocking hammers into real external hammers."

Well, that's different. :) It'd be interesting to see one again. Like I said, the few that I tried just felt a little flimsy to me, but that may have been addressed with the new and improved models. Sounds like they're listening to the customers, and that's a good sign. I didn't like the feel of them at the shoulder, but that is totally subjective and based on build and preference. I don't doubt their complete serviceability, and it may fit you just great. And there's no doubt they're good and intimidating! I guarantee that anybody being faced with the prospect of a double load of buckshot will be dropping a double load of something else... :D

Many PDs carry the 870 "squad ready" with the hammer down on an empty chamber. The only way to get them this way is to dry fire the piece, and it doesn't seem to do any harm. Dry firing 1000 times a night may be a different story though. Also - highly recommend an orange follower in the mag tube so you can SEE it is empty - and also check with your finger in addition to visual verification. TVs last longer this way.
