I wanted to share my most recent acquisition.
I am more into practical/utilitarian/work knives but occasionally I'll
pick up something impractical just for fun.
And I usually don't like spending a fortune on knives.
I am familiar with Rat 1's (I got 4 and a Rat 2)

Having said that, here it is...

Ontario Knives Utilitac II....

I took the lanyard off right away...personal preference

Cool, I now have a back-up to my document shredder...

Arts and crafts time...

Dead mesquite is some hard wood...

All that work made me thirsty...

I'm pretty much indifferent about blackened blades but when it almost
scratches off with a fingernail...then it's like a little kid and a scab...
"stop pickin' at it or it won't heal"...
NO...MUST...CAN'T... STOP...

Ahh...that's better..mmm, clean shaven...

Shortly after I got it I started to feel buyer's remorse...
Man, this thing is BUTT UGLY!!!
UNCOMFORTABLE...
BITES INTO MY HAND WHEN USING AND KILLS MY THUMB WHEN CLOSING...
Only saving grace, I kinda like the blade...
$30 out-of-pocket...let me see what I can do about this thing...

First, get rid of the sharp edges all around....

Knock down the pointy protrusions at the top of the handle...

Get rid of that ugly blade hump...

mkay...better...

Yeah, I'm diggin' it now; man...

Feels like a COMPLETELY different knife now...

Had to work on the lock release a bit, too. Was biting into my thumb pretty bad.
Who's STUPID idea was it to put jimping on the lock release?
Hm, well, guess what, dude...IT SUCKS !!!

Man, it is actually pretty darn comfortable in the hand now...

Gonna carry this to work as it isn't exactly practical for use on the farm.

At least now I got a EDC user/beater that's just as butt-ugly as any $300 knife and prettier than some $400 knives.

Anyway...
that's my story and I'm stickin' to it...

thanks for reading

Nice work, bizarre is the only word to describe the jimping on the liner locker!

There is a long thread on the Utilitac 2 here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ing-knife-under-30?highlight=Ontario+utilitac

I've purchased 5 or 6 of them for people at my old job after showing one around next to a more expensive folder & stressing how good a knife it is for the money. I got to sharpen them all regularly for a few months & they all stayed tight & held up well in a rough place for most work knives. Very well made folder for $30.

I see it has a stonewashed finish under the black blade.....does the non black version not come with a stone wash?

I've been eyeing these for a long time and was wondering if all the black coated utilitac II's have a stone washed finish under the coat.

The non-black versions are satin-finished. The stonewashed finish is probably applied to help the black coating adhere to the blade better. Cold Steel's black blades also have a nice stonewashed finish hiding under their coatings.

The Utilitac II's are almost as good as the RAT 1's to me, but I prefer the rounder handled ones to the squared off ones.
