Got my BK2 today...now I get it.

I got my BK2 in today, my first Becker knife. I had several KBAR USMC fighting knives, love em, but needed something more utilitarian and settled on the BK2 after joining this forum. Now I get it, I see what the big deal is. Now, with this hefty beast, what is the best way to keep an edge. Seems a pretty large angle to the V edge.

Also, now I understand why people strip 'em, put nice scales on them, etc. This is a great knife! I need some more Becker knives.

More Beckers?! Why, right this way sir. We'll be more than happy to hook, ...er help you out. Welcome man, it gets worse.

Yeah... I know.... just ordered a BK7 :D

I am relatively new to knives, can someone tell me what it is to convex a blade? Is that to put a one sided edge on it or recontour the edge? No dumb questions round here, right?

First of all, Welcome to the party! The water here is warm- jump right in..:D

As the owner of both the BK2 and BK7 ,if you want more "slice" to the blade, the #7 will give it to you. It's a great knife and maybe my favorite Becker of all. I am still trying to decide . I have them all but the #3..

As to convexing the BK2, due to it's .250" thickness and Saber grind , is the best BK platform on which to do such work, IMHO.

Here is a recent thread about convex edges-

Thanks for the info on the convex edges, makes perfect sense. I'll stick with the 20 degrees for now until I ammore versed at sharpening and reprofiling.

Once you do convex the edge it will cut like a nuclear powered lightsaber. Welcome aboard, now buy more beckers

Welcome, and congrats on your new purchase! Once I convexed my BK2's (yes, I have more than one - it's a hard knife to resist), I never went back. Their chopping ability was transformed. Enjoy!!!!

Tell me about it yak, I am smelling what you're stepping in! I just got a BK2 for Christmas and can't wait to get back home to start doing some work on it. Outdoors here I come! Are you planning on stripping yours?

Congrats on your new BK2, it's a true outdoorsman's knife in every sense - a full sized fixed blade workhorse but not overly large. I've had mine for about a month now and it's been my constant companion since it arrived. It goes with me everyplace, usually on my right side on my belt. I altered my sheath by having it sewn to fit my 1.5" belt perfectly so no flopping around. No other alterations so far, I actually kinda like it as-is for the moment. Maybe some micarta scales in the future, but no hurry.

jmuckle, I do not plan on stripping mine just now, maybe later. I kinda like the black. I will probably go ahead and convex the edge though, as soon as I learn what tools I need to do so and practice a bit.

Congrats holding a bk2 in your hand is a great feeling. It feels very substantial ready to take on any task.

Yak,

One other thing worth mentioning.,

When you first get a BK2, the knife feels pretty heavy.

After you handle for a few days, it seems lighter due to your hands and arms are getting used to it..

It's one heck of a knife, isn't it? When are you going to get it dirty and share some pics with us? :D

Welcome, btw!

Nahhh, I use Khukuris around the campsite and in the back yard, so its well within reason. I love the heft it has, very good feel to this knife. Can't wait for the BK7.

GingivitisKahn, I'll take some pics soon.

I will be taking a "family pic" when the new BK7 arrives next week. In the mean time, got to start somewhere, eh?
