I got my first HI today and I really like it what a beast

It is a Villager Jange

By Sher - Kami

Walnut handle

Can anyone tell me how the handleing charcteristics of this model compare to the others

Anything about the maker

Thanks to all the reading I did here inspired me to go with a HI

Sher, the Tiger was known for making the beefiest and most sturdy of the blades HI sold. This Kami's blades were usually thicker and heavier than the other kamis. The Tiger no longer is producing blades to my knowledge so you have a piece of history. Also I really like the mountain Walnut handles.

Hope you enjoy it and welcome to the club!

Congratulations on your good snag, JParanee. At first I thought that you had picked up the Jange that Lorien has up on the exchange but then I realized that yours is a Villager finish. I wish that I could tell you about how it handles 'cause I really like that khukuri. The only thing that I seem to remember about the Jange (IIRC) is that it is one of the few HI khuks that doesn't have the tang going all the way through the handle and peened over. That doesn't hurt its reputation though. Look it up on the Search and you'll probably get a good idea of it from the reviews. That model hasn't been around much lately so not too many of us recent guys have one:(. It is beautiful though. Is it about 22" long overall? Weigh in at about 2 pounds?

Sher I know a little more about-from his early days of 3# AKs to the many different khuks that I've been fortunate to acquire that he made. Though he toned himself down as far as over-building his blades, everything that I have of his speaks of a finely crafted blade that will certainly last longer than my lifetime. 7/16-1/2" spines, as a rule, on his blades, nice mirror-stone finish and some of the best edges on his blades consistently.

Though I'm somewhat envious, I'm really happy for you:thumbup:. Go out, find some wood and have some fun.

Oh yeah! Make sure you read the Safety Sticky. Don't want any extra openings in the skin.

Peace

Rick

Thanks Guys

Rick it is a little over 20 inches with a 3/8 inch blade I really like it

I can't find the one lorien has up can you post a link

All I need is a Foxy Follie and I will be set . Do you know where I can get one .These things are addictive:D

Curious...your kukri looks like it has a metal butt cap, is the tang peened over with a keeper? might be full tang... my Jange is partial tang and the butt looks like this:

I believe it is a full tang it has a butt plate and the tang looks to be peened over

Beautiful one you got there. I was lucky enough to snag a lonely AK by Sher (the Tiger) Kami when I first became hooked, hadn't realised he stopped making knives.

There was just a Foxy Folly that lasted for nearly a week in a DOtD not long ago, they are sure to pop up again so stay tuned and watch what she posts. Alternatively you can email Yangdu directly at himimp@aol.com and ask her if she has one or if she will order one for you from the Kamis. It is always great to see a new person with the bug. ;)

I saw that and missed it by an hour or so. maybe next time.

I also sent an email to Yangdu

Thanks

Be patient, she is taking Pala to the eye doctors this week so I think things are busy there in the Computer Shack in Reno.

Very nice... and a nice gift f/another BF regular.

Please post up some pics when you get out and use it and let us know your impressions. I think I'm in the same boat as you are/were... I have been reading a LOT lately and the Kuk bug has really bit hard. I have many nice custom big blades... but have yet to get a Khukuri. I'm hoping to remedy that soon.

I will tell ya I have alot of custom Bowie's that I carry and use alot but I have a hard time beating on a 1600 dollar Bagwell . These HI kukri's are a bargin and from what I can tell perform awesome. I can tell there are alot of these in my future

That's a really nice khukuri for your first. You picked up a good one Joe.

JParanee,

Lorien's Jange is listed under "For Sale: Production Knives Individual". His listing post is "Blade Sale: Big Fixed Blades!" with the Last Post date of 4-19-2010. I usually just go to the Exchange page and enter "khukuri" into the Search. If you do the Search you'll see the listing near the top of the second page. Lorien's Jange is made by Sher, too. In addition to the high finish, this blade has a couple of nice "aunlo bal (finger of strength/force/energy)" fullers(grooves) near the spine that go nearly to the tip. Its tang doesn't go through. Plain wood on the butt of the handle like the picture Big W posted.

Keep your eyes open and I'm sure that you'll see the Foxy's Folly show up. I would recommend keeping an eye out for the Yvsa Cherokee Special(YCS), Ganga Ram Special(GRS) and the Dui Chirra. The YCS comes in about 17-18" and the other two are about 20-22" models (unless you see the 18" Baby Ganga Ram Special(BGRS)). All four models are beautiful in form and function with impeccable pedigrees.

Welcome to HIKV!!

Rick

The YCS has several different variations to it but I am most fond of mine... though one of the checked ones would be cool to get too...

My YCS (made by Sher, the Tiger) (scale is in cm, so mine is right about 20" OAL)

here is a detail picture of the handle's carvings...

you also get an awl with the YCS set

Other than the animal headed Khukuris, this is by far my favorite wall hanger of all.
No doubt though, it will chop, oh yes it will chop indeed! :D

Wasn't all that fond of the handle design of it though, I like them all carved up rather than inlaid with mystic symbols. Like I said though, the one that had the checkerboard is one I would also like to get but it seems also to be incredibly rare so I am not really holding out much hope of getting one. I am satisfied with the picture of it, which in the end saves me a fair bit of dough too. ;)
