Hi guys & gals!

Some days ago I posted on the "Whatcha got on order thread" that I ordered my first Queen knife. It´s a #48 Whittler with stag carved bone handles.
I got in the mail today. I read a lot of bad things about this company like gaps, dull blades, poor F&F etc etc etc
The more I´m impressed with mine. When I unwrapped it out of the paper it was resting in. The knife is just great, and my first Whittler pattern at all.

Here are some pics

Being honest, the blades are a bit dull but not that bad, I think I can easily fix it up - though I don´t have real experience with the sharping of D2 steel at all.

I definitelly don´t regret buying this beautiful knife. Though I think it´s still out of their "old stock".
How would you guys call this frame shape?

Any comments are welcome, as always :)

Definitely old stock. As for D2,I have a 1972 Queen Torpedo Jack with D2 blades. I started it on a Lansky System, working my way up from coarse to medium to fine stones, and then finished it off freehand with a Black Arkansas Stone. When I finished, the blade was SCARY sharp! IMHO D2 is Awesome!

Nice one Andy.......

You're correct it being from older stock.....the carved stag bone (CSB) handles were late 1990's then came Bird's Eye Maple (BEM) then the Amber Carved Stag Bone or some dealers call it Aged (ACSB) and the new Queen Cutlery now calls their handle material Honey Amber Stag Bone..................and as far as the frame shape, why a swell center whittler....

Nice! You'll find that the D2 is thin enough that sharpening isn't hard at all. BTW, I grew up with Max and Moritz, loved Busch!!!!

When Queen knives are good, they're excellent companions. I have several and they are amongst my favourites, I have got a couple of poor examples which can't be ignored, but overall they give a lot of pride in ownership. Glad you got a good one, I actually prefer Whittlers to Stockman when it comes to 3 blades.

Thanks, Will

Andi,

I guess you could call it a tuxedo pattern, although it's not nearly as extreme as the Case tuxedo. This one reminds me a lot of the GEC Conductor shape.

Edit to add: I went back and looked again and noticed that yours is wider on one side. I have no idea what you would call it now.

Thanks for the kind and informative replies, fellows :)

@ Blaine: The Tuxedo pattern like the GEC #33 was my first thought, too. But it is no real equal end - the side with the mainblade is thicker than the other side.

@ Jim: A swellcenter whittler would also be my thought, but I don´t know if you can call it that way.

I´m curious how the steel will sharpen up. There are some different opinions out there. I´ll see tomorrow. Will, I think I made a good deal with this knife. :)

That bone looks great! Wish Queen would bring that back. Hope sharpening the D2 goes smoothly for you - I'm a relatively newbie sharpener, and as of yet I just can't get Queen D2 sharp.

Andi, very nice whittler! I just love Queen's D2 steel. It is my favorite steel available from any current manufacturer.
And you're right, when you get a good Queen, it's going to be REALLY good! Glad yours is so nice.
I hope it serves you well; use it in good health. :)

Congrats. Queen can make a good knife.
I also became a fan of Queen's D2 shortly after carrying and using their knives.

Very nice, Andi! I had two like this in 1095 and stag. I recently gave one to a friend to learn to whittle with. They are very nice knives. Mine are a little off as far as gaps but the more I use knives the less I care and I have come around to these again to see them as very sturdy usable knives with great style!

Congrats!

Swell Center Whittler is the pattern for sure.
Nice knife, Andi! D-2 is a little hard to sharpen, but retains an edge well.
I love the stuff, and ask for it for custom knives on the odd occasion when I order one.

Real nice Andi, and a good size too

Nice looking knife. I have a couple of these and really like them. They are a great size to carry and use!

I think Queen makes a fantastic knife. There are more than there share of wobbley blades in my experience but when you get a good one they are top notch!
