I heard good things about Spyderco so I went ahead and got the Endura model. I got it for 30 dollars on ebay and didn't even think about why it was so low since it said it was new and in the box.

Once I got it I tested it out by trying to slash a piece of paper. It wouldn't cut at all and my Mtech could give me a better cut. I inspected the blade and it was like a chisel ground blade. I broke out my sharpener and went out to work and it now cuts paper without even trying.

First off, Welcome to Bladeforums!

A new Endura should have cut through paper like warm butter. Are you sure it's new?

Is it a fully serrated blade? The serrations are only cut on one side, but as amen74 said, it should have sliced right through. Anyway, congrats on your sharpening skills! :D

The seller marked it as new.

You should be able to tell if it is. Just by looking at the knife, I would think. Any new Spyderco should cut like a laser. Every new Spyderco I bought does.
If you could post pics it sure would help. :D

Got a few pics of it.

Maybe that's why it was only $30.00..... :D

As you found out, VG10 is easy to sharpen. It also keeps an edge.

Well, you had a rough start for your first Spyderco, but you seem to have solved the problem without much trouble. You'll find that the Endura is an excellent all around knife. I carry an Armorer's Endura (variation with a folding pin punch in the back of the handle) everyday.

Hi Rguy,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx for the confidence and support.

There is a real problem with "new in the box" product sold on ebay (or elsewhere). I know it's hard to believe, but sellers will actually tell lies.

It's especially problem when people take them apart, put them together, sell them as new. Most people don't have a clue how to put a knife together. Just because something has screws (like your car) doen't mean you have the skill to take it apart and properly put it back together.

Poor Fish has done right by me on several eBay auctions. I'm pretty sure they were selling it as "NIB" in good faith. Sometimes one that hasn't been sharpened too well just slips through the cracks and makes it to the public.

+1:thumbup:

I've bought from that seller also, never had any problems.

OP welcome to Bladeforums :)

Every Spyderco I've ever bought was the sharpest out of the box, than any other production knife. It is possible for one (of thousands) to slip through QC.

I have bought many from poor fish and nothing but good thing to say about those transactions-Every spyderco I ever bought was scary sharp out of the box
