was intending to get a standard FRN handled Delica 4 or Native FRN... ended up spending a bit more than I intended, but got a foliage green Delica 4 FRN with the ZDP-189 blade steel. This is just such an amazing knife, i'm having trouble finding something less than ideal about the design.

sorry the pictures are so crap, i was in a bit of a hurry.

there are simply too many great things about the Delica to actually list all of them, I think. Suffice to say I am very pleased. Oh, and this thing came sharp enough out of the box to slice an atom in half. Kudos to the Spyderco team on an amazing product, i look forward to extended use in the future.

now send it to tom when you get tired of it ONLY being able to slice an atom. :D
When it gets back it would slice, dice, mince, and turn an atom into a fine powder. :D:D

British Racing Green, not Foliage Green ;)

Tom Krein is known for his transformations of Delicas/Enduras from hollow grinds to flat grinds. If a hollow grind is giving you problem while cutting whatever it is you cut, flat grinding the blade might help.

Since you wanted to be technical... isn't the grind called a sabre grind, not a hollow grind? :p:D

I have noticed that this Delica has a bit of side-to-side blade play when opened or closed... absolutely no top-to-bottom, but a bit of side to side.

Is this an issue I should be concerned with? This was sort of an expensive knife. Is it something I can correct myself? Or what say you?

EDIT: Doesn't Tom Krein also make custom fixed blades? He does beautiful work. This knife can easily slice a thin piece of paper cleanly, which is my litmus test for sharpness. No tearing, just beautiful cuts. If i want to get it reprofiled, I know where to send it now!

Second EDIT: tightened up the pivot pin a bit and the blade play issue is gone now. I've never had a knife where tightening the pivot changed that; maybe I've had cheap knives? Who knows. It's working fine now :) maybe it got loosened up from being opened and closed a million times in the last two days. Such a great knife.

"Hollow Saber," I think.

Tightening the pivot usually solves the problem. Just don't get it too tight.

yeah problem solved, i've got it dialed in just right

i was scared for a sec there... i think it just worked its way loose after being opened and shut about a million times.

How does that happen? When you open your blade, that doesn't exactly have anything to do with turning the torx screw, does it?

Of course it does. Unless the pivot is encased in a bushing, it is in contact with the tang. Every time the blade opens or closes, there will be some friction. If that pivot is not very tight or Loc-tited, it will gradually loosen. This is a common phenomenon with folders.

Even pinned slipjoints can develop side to side play. I've peened a few back to their original tightness.

Friction around the D-bolt casing will cause the torx screw inside to unwind? I guess that would kinda make sense if we're talking about an expansion/contraction kind of thing due to heat/cold.

well it's come loose again today so there is noticeable blade play... should I just go ahead and put a little Loc-Tite on the threads? I know i have loctite blue laying around the house somewhere. Loose floppy blade is annoying...

I would email Spyderco about it, ask their advice first, then let us know what they say. Don't think that should be coming loose that easily.

I applied a tiny bit of Loc-tite blue. Have flicked it open another million times today and no movement. I'll report back in a few days to see if that's a permanent solution, but I think it probably is.

god I love this knife.
