:Dhello everyone!

today i got my first XM18 - just plain awesome  thanks to all of you!

one minute after unboxing it, a friend who was visiting at the time, grabbed my brand new XM18 - used to much force flicking his wrist trying to open it and tossed it across the living room - it hit a glass door and fell on the stone floor....

the very tip of the spanto blade broke off in the process

he was like :foot:

however the knife is so awesome that even this tragedy could not spoil my joy :D

didnt have time to have the broken tip restored though - i only trust one master bladesmith with it and its a four hour drive to his workshop...

the ti screws and standoffs make the xm18 even more desirable!

thanks, for watching - and for pointing me to this awesome company!!

I tell my kids to not touch what they cannot afford to replace, and try to live by that myself. I hope your buddy offers to "fix" it!

When I drop my pocket tools in the living room I tend to be more worried about the flooring material(s) than my gear.

Oh man! Tip broke huh? That sucks buddy. Here's a TIP, no more flipping for mr butter fingers. At least no one got hurt I suppose. I broke a tip off of one of my crks about a year ago. I put it on the wicked edge and had to re profile it but it came out beautifully. Sharper than it was before the accident actually. Enjoy that new knife! Use it well.

I quite letting my father open my xm's as he ALWAYS NO MATTER WHAT I SAY uses his wrist. He's used to a skyline that he has fairly tight, and I guess he doesn't know how to master the proper "flip" technique. Hope the knifes alright and your buddy's not! Lol jk

After reading your post several times, I just end up shaking my head. Too many questions come to mine, too bad acting stupid wasn't painful.
Anyhow congrats on your new Hinderer and from the picture you posted I don't see any damage to the tip, or was this a "before" picture. BTW wrist flicking not necessary to open your knife, much info on this site and stickies on how to properly open and adjust to make it butterfly smooth. Enjoy !

HOLY MOLY!!! I bet you wanted to kill him for a second!! Haha! I'd make fun of him for that for a long time :)

Welcome to the Herd!!

I can't see where the tip broke...

I had a friend who was just like that. He just HAD to put his cave man paws on every brand new thing I got and would somehow end up damaging it or nearly damaging it. It doesn't matter that I warned him ahead of time how much it cost or to not touch it. Note that I said "had" and not "have". Glad you're still in good spirits but I would have been PISSED.

I never want to be the first to use other people's stuff. My bro-in-law picked up a few new firearms last year. this summer, we went up to visit and ended up going shooting. He was getting annoyed that I didn't want to be the first to fire them. He hadn't fired them yet. I'm w/you in that I don't want people pawing my stuff. Stems from my childhood when my cousins would break their toys, and I didn't want them touching mine since they'd break them too.

Geez, I have a good buddy, the last two new firearms I took with me to shoot, he had them loaded up and was on the line with them before I knew it, he has no issue helping me "break them in"...

:)

Then again, I'd have it no other way with my shooting partners...otherwise, they probably wouldn't be my shooting buddies.

AARRGGHH!! I would have picked that knife up off the floor and buried the broken tip in his chest!!!!!!!!! J/K

I think your friend just bought himself a broken-tipped XM-18 and your new one should be on the way! :)

Seriously though, the blade can be reprofiled to "fix" the broken tip, but essentially it means removing enough steel so that the broken part is sharpened away. Not the biggest deal in the world and depending on your preferences you may well have wanted to reprofile the rather obtuse 22-24* angle Spantos usually come with... but still... wow! I wouldn't let that friend ever touch another of my knives. Just sayin'....

Appears as though there is some agreement among BF members as to your "Buddy" :) as for the "tip". Assuming the damage was relatively minor, a trip back to the ranch for a professional sharpening (minor charge that includes return postage) will probably minimize or mitigate the memory (at least when you view the knife) dunno about when you see your buddy.
Just a thought. Lesson learned and with relatively minor consequences, I think everyone can learn from this. We wouldn't hand someone a loaded weapon ( let alone someone inexperienced in handling weapons)
I think we should be careful who we hand our knives to.
I would hate to see an innocent get seriously injured by the somewhat careless albeit unintentional act of another.
