Got my Gunting

After searching for a few weeks, I finally got a mint (never used, carried, sharpened, etc...) still in the box, Gunting. A nice surprise when it arrived this morning was that it was numbered (#736, black clip) and with Bram Frank's signature on the blade. I didn't realize it was a numbered model when I bought it (on-line). Anyway, now I'm wondering , should I keep it mint, or keep it as a "user" as I was going to intend on doing with it?

I am curious what others will say. I would be tempted to make this one a shelf queen, since it was signed by Bram Frank.

Ron

No, it wasn't signed by Bram, the blad eis etched with his signature, which can be found on other 1st run models.

Keep it as a shelf queen until you've studied how to use it properly. If you already do know (I mean, really know), keep looking for a used Gunting. You'll probably a substantial bargain since you won't be contending with the collector crowd. Many people seem to pass by "used" knives without a second look. A near-mint knife is a better carry sometimes because you won't ever be as reluctant to use it or really put it through its paces while training.

If you want an EDC knife, it shouldn't matter if someone has already done so, as long as it's in good condition.

I'm pretty descent with knowing how to use the Gunting. So, that's 2 votes for "Shelf Queen"...anyone else? I guess I could buy the new Lapu Lapu Corto and use that as my EDC, since it is less expensive.

What was it's value when you bought it, compared to its MSRP? I've had the same problem with a knife I ordered right before they stopped making them, the SRKW RatTrap, it's such a sweet knife, but I've decided to store it safely, rather than using it and risk damaging such a hard to replace blade, and as a result, it's appreciated a fair bit, and should continue to, I'm assuming.

No guntings were etched with my signature. Only my logo in Professor Presas' honor: Abaniko Double Action...
IF IT IS SIGNED BY ME ITS EITHER not MY SIGNATURE OR ITS ONE OF THE FEW i ACTUALLY SIGNED FOR WHOMEVER BOUGHT IT NEW.
Sorry,,new Laptop..hit caps by accident.

So since my signature is a trademark I'd bet its real..ROFL..

be safe

saw a live blade go for $695 a few weeks ago..

It would be nice to see a picture of the blade in question. I would like to compare it to mine. ;)

Hi Bram, sorry, it's not your "signature" but it's your logo. Sorry for the confusion folks!

I carried mine and used irt as an EDC utility knife until I got tired of the fkack that it attracted from the folks in my office after 9/11. Then they began to enforce the federal law on 2.5" knives in federal offices and my Gunting became redundant. If you have one, it is a user and not a safe queen.

zenheretic,
I'd post a pic, but I don't think my account allows me to. I'd be happy to send you a pic via e-mail if you want.

If you use photobucket or imageshack you can post all you want. Both are free photo hosting services. ;)

Should you use it? Well Bram has new models out and even an improved Gunting in near future so it is up to you.

Right now it has high collector value....it is possible that demand will drop once Bram's newer knives are well established...hard to say, predicting the future is difficult. :p Use it for everyday stuff would decrease its collector value if you are into that sort of thing.

IMO opinion for a regular pocket knife it is to big for EDC/tool use. The Ramp gets in the way (not during actual use, but during carry)...but it is a sturdy mother! I remember a fellow who used his for wiring as he was an electrician...was a great work horse for him. I also remember a fellow who cut the ramp off! If you get that crazy idea just sell it and get something else, no need to desicrate a fighter like that.

Carrying in a sheath for Self Defense it is great, assuming you know how to use it.

I was thinking about getting Brams' new Lapu Lapu Corto and use that...I don't generally collect knives for value and collectibility (other obsessions take care of that!), but just the fact that the Gunting can fetch well over $300 makes me want to keep it mint, and see what happens. I'm also not sure about the new Lapu Lapu. I'd be more inclined to use that as an EDC, but the Spydie is a "tank" and feels quite comfortable in my small hands. Damn.

Look..
I'll be @ IWA, the Eugene Knife Show and Atlanta Blade Show..
I'm more than willing to actually sign anyones Blade to increase its collector value.
no cost, no gimmicks, no strings..just a signature..
The original Guntings will not decrease in value as LLcs hit market..they will increase as they become old Muscle car versions of the Gunting family..Just saw a Hemi Cuda go for 1.2 million USD..WOW..

I've retired a few of my Spydie Guntings..the new Cherusker Messer LLCs are cool.
Kin Op rules..
Theres lots of knives that use my KinOp opening these days..
its amazing what a bunch of years will do to an original frivolous idea..like make it main stream..and acceptable

be safe

I still carry my Gunting in a sheath and CRMIPT in my pack but I do think the LLC's are better.

Slimmer and the conforms to my hand better. I need to order some really soon.

Once people start buying, borrowing, or stealing your idea...I guess you have "arrived". :D

I like the muscle car analogy. I'll have to start using that for the endless threads like this one that will forever be cropping up.
