OMFG, this thing is scary sharp now. I sent my FRN Delica VG-10 to him on Monday, November 24, 2003 and just recieved it back today on Monday, December 1, 2003. Less than one week turnaround time! I hours on end with the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204MF trying to get my edge back on the Delica but there was some micro chipping I just could not get rid of. I found that Ben did free sharpening demo's so I opted to give him a shot at it. Now ive gotta start saving pennies for the Apex! I will try and take some good pics of his work. Thank you Ben if you read here.

Dear Johnson,
This knife is factory sharpened at about 21*. I took it down to 17*. You could take it to 15* but it would be a very delicate edge for a pocket knife. It would have a very wide bevel making resharpening more difficult.
I used a 180 med to cut in the bevel. A 320 & 600 to finish, and 3000 polish tape for the mirror finish.

Hope you like it,
Ben

I sent him a Mad Dog mini-Shrike some time ago. . .came from the maker with less than adequate edges (primary and upper edge). It was returned in less than a week, from Ben, with scary-scary sharp edges ! :D

Ben is definitely awesome !

Ben Dale is a great man to do business with, a great sharpener, and makes a great product. With a little practice, the EdgePro will give you a lot of sharp. With a lot of practice.... muwahahahahaha!

i sent my knife in a while ago also.

when i got it back, i was amazed at how insanely sharp it was! i mean, it was just unbelievable. i went around cutting all sorts of things (paper, tape, plastic things, toenails, etc) just to be sure i hadn't been fooling myself.

not only was the knife insanely sharp, ben is an awesome guy!
when it got back, there was a letter explaining that the edges were way off (17 degrees and 26 degrees (from all my savage attacks with that dang crock stick)), and he reprofiled it to a more suitable 22 degrees.
the edge is a mirror too! it sparkles in the light like hundreds of diamonds, a very cool effect.

honestly, at first, i wasn't really sure if i would ever get an edgepro, but now, i'm getting one, and i don't care how much it costs :D

He did the same for my Emerson CQC7-A. Put a mirror finish on it that was razor sharp. I'm going to have to invest in one of these after the first of the year.

This is always the reaction when people see a knife sharpened on Ben's Edge-Pro.

It's deer season here in Wisconsin, and lots of guys are getting out there field knives. And as it is with most people, they freehand their knives, or sharpen them on cheaper items, like crock sticks. To be fair, even these guys have sharper knives than most people you'd see on the street.

They all say, "Hey, Ichabod, my knife is really sharp; I've been honing for years!"

Then you hand them a knife fresh from the Edge-Pro. I don't think most people realize just how sharp a knife can get. I have visitors to my home that are surprised by my kitchen knives!

And Ben is a nice guy. He'll spend time with you teaching and coaching.

The first one is free! :D

It sounds like he is trying to get you addicted or something! lol!

Ben really knows how to put an edge on a knife! I bought the Edge Pro Apex with the stone upgrade kit and it is by far the best sharpening system I have. Ben will only sharpen one knife. I know, I asked. I would like to send him all my knives. God did not bless me with the skill or patience to get my knives scary sharp. With the Edge Pro I can get them really sharp but not close to what Ben can do. His system is well worth the money.

The EdgePro Apex is an awesome tool. Please note that it is not a miracle cure. You'll need to practice with it to get best results.

Roshi,

I'm glad you added that, I was about to say that to Scott Dog. It's like with any skill, you improve over time.

I also think that you get better at spotting flaws. I bought a lighted loupe. However, after a few years, I learned what I was looking at!:D

You learn how to 'shape' the edge. A little more here, a little less there, and more uniformity throughout.

I have a light touch. By the third sharpening, I have removed all of the defects and polished with the tapes several times. Perhaps a few mid-week stroppings. These knives, the knives with the defects removed, are just spooky.

Are you familiar with that 'feathery' feeling on your hand?

(There are knuts here who just got a cold sweat when I wrote 'feathery.')

the store i work in has been doing trial and error on different sharpening systems deciding on what to stock and what not to. i cant tell you guys how intimidated i was when the edgepro systems came in...since im the "knife guy" it fell on me to learn the system. (apex model for sale, pro model for "in store" sharpening service) ive been practicing for three days and i can tell you without hesitation this is the baddest mofo ive ever seen...its better than the warthogs from south africa, its better than all of them...(at least the ones ive tried)as far as im concerned we've found our "top end" sharpener....respects to all

I wasn't sure I wanted to buy and Edge Pro, but I thought I would take Ben up on his kind offer of a free one off sharpening, and I knew just the knife.
I had a custom in BG-42, and dog knows what it was hardend to because diamond sharpeners were having very little effect. In fact because the diamond hones were working so slowly I was well on the way to ruining it badly (I was getting tired and sloppy = uneven and rounded bevels).

Well, when this SOB came back in pristine condition and with a literal mirror finish on the bevel I KNEW I had to get one right away. Took me 3-4 knives to get the hang of, but I was surprised how easy it was to learn (looks intimidating as heck).

Order an edgepro professional w/scissor adapter, diamond hones and case. I let you all know, but im sure it will be fine.

I just bought the spyderco sharpmaker yesterday, and so far it's working great for me. What are the advantages of the Edge Pro? What will it do that the sharpmaker won't?

Gong, it really doesn't do much the Sharpmaker won't do, but it does it better. The Edge Pro is arguably more versatile, with the exception of serrations. There the Sharpmaker has the edge (awful pun not initially intended :p ). The Edge Pro will remove metal much faster than the Sharpmaker and give more consistent bevels to your edges. I can now get most of my knives close to as sharp with a Sharpmaker or freehand as I can with an Edge Pro, but the Edge Pro edge will be much prettier. Until you've seen one you won't understand just how an edge can be pretty, but believe me, it's the ultimate final touch. People stare when I tell them how much I paid for my Apex, but they also ask me to sharpen their knives so I must be doing something right. I haven't regretted that purchase for a second.
