Got my list (pretty much) down to 2 knives

I've owned a couple knives before..... nothing serious. Most recently a $3 knife out of a clearance bin. When my friend (who has one from the same "company") flipped his open and the blade actually came out and hit the floor, I decided it's about time to get something nicer. So, been doing my research. Got to handle a Gerber Air Ranger today and ended up ordering one as the store didn't have any in stock. Liked the feel of it. But now I'm starting to second guess myself. Now I'm starting to think about a Delica after reading rave reviews on it... So, would you guys recommend sticking with the Air Ranger or cancelling the order on that and going with the Delica? This knife will be used for EDC, as well as taking backpacking for some light cutting work. And maybe some whittling if I need some entertainment while I'm out there. :) Thanks in advance for your responses. God bless ya and have a nice day.

The two knives you mentioned are around the same cost. But the VG10 blade on the Delica is much better than the blade of mystery steel on the Air Ranger.

Its a compromise. The Gerber has an attractive machined aluminium handle whereas the Spyderco has plastic. Dispite its proven strength a lot of people are put off by it. Then again the Spyderco has a top class steel (VG-10) wheras the Gerber has a blade of an unknown concoction. If you have been getting along with a $3.00 up to now I dare say you wont notice the performance difference between the two. Should you start to use it more and more because you now own something that is a little more 'capable' then the ugly ducking will turn into a Swan.

OK, the real answer is go with the Spyderco, but I like the handles on the Air ranger too, not to mention the blade shape, its such a shame Gerber will not pony up for a steel they arn't ashamed of and have to call it 'Surgical'

Delica, all the way. I like the design of the Air Ranger too, but there's a reason the Delica is so popular.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

You've got your list down to 2 knives ... stick around a while and you'll have a list down to a couple hundred knives, and you'll find yourself thinking $300 isn't toooo much for a really nice one. :D

Can't ever go wrong with Spyderco. I've got an Endura "Wave" on the way as we speak!

buy a benchmade 710HS and a spyderco manix and you don't have ot buy anything else :)

H´s talking about switching from a $3 knife to "something nicer". While assuming that anything might be nicer than a $3 knife i guess he was not thinking in the USD 100+ range.

My vote goes to the Delica or maybe an Endura.

One other quick thought..... I'm pretty much decided on the Delica..... it didn't take much convincing :). Would you guys recommend the combo edge or plain edge? I've heard with shorter blades the combo doesn't give you enough of either to be useful.

Go for the plain edge. Serrations are no big advantage except on fibrous material, like heavy cord. For general use, plain edge will do fine, especially if the blade is sharp. Spyderco edges are sharp.

That reminds me, sharpening ... oh, well, that's another thread! :)

I assume from your post that you're relatively inexperienced when it comes to knives. I apologize if I'm wrong. A plain edge is much easier to sharpen than serrations. Plus you mentioned that you plan on using the knife for whittling. Once again, plain edges rule in this context.

Yep, plain edge Delica, can't possibly go wrong.

just think, not too long from now you'll be asking us should you get the large or small Sebenza ..... :)

Go with the Spyderco over the Gerber any day of the week.

And not to confuse things further, but I think the Calpyso Jr is a better knife than the Delica myself, as it fits my hand better and the full flat grind slices like a laser. The Delica is still great though. It's Spyderco's biggest selling knife for a good reason.
