Got my new DSLR - Tell me what you think.

Mike - Something else to play with is, "Painting with Light". Get a flashlight and go to town. Artsy results, but it can be fun.

Or a laser pointer. With those it's really cool to shoot things that absorb and disperse the light, like your hand...

Cool pics Mike, man that butterfly has some awesome colors on its wings. I can see now your going to have some great knife photo's. Thanks for sharing,:cool:

Those are very nice Mike.

Looks like you are getting the hang of it. :D

Joshua - I have never tried a laser. Sounds like fun! I will give it a shot some time. Thanks.

note: DO NOT POINT LASERS INTO THE EYES. but, putting an led into your false eye can be fun :)

lastes and led's are pretty intense concentrated points of light, in order to get them to expose correctly in a single shot you often have to use a shutter speed thats really fast, under exposing everything else around it. But, with something like a 1 second or longer exposure, you can write on a surface and a lot of other fun stuff.

Sounds cool! I would also like to try my hand at HDR photography. I think a lot of the results look cheesy but I have seen results on these forums and other sites that really interest me in the technique.

Thanks for all your help guys. I really gotta sit here and check out the manual for the camera, I haven't even opened it yet!

When I got my GF-1 a few months back I downloaded the manual in .pdf from the manufacturers website - that way I can fiddle with the camera and take photos of the crap on my desk while reading the manual on my computer screen.

Being able to read the manual with the camera in my hands really helped!

I also bought a Nikon D5000 and it came with the kit 18-55mm lens. It really is a nice camera, easy to use and still gives you all the options of a DSLR. I also bought a 70-300mm lens but found myself changing lenses often and it was a pain in the ass. I finally settled on a 18-270mm Tamron lens and I use that 95% of the time. It really is a great 'all around' lens and perfect for what I need.

One thing I really enjoy about the D5000 is you can take pictures in a high ISO without too much grainy pixels(noise) and without a flash....very very handy.

I think my next purchase is a flash, maybe a SB100 for portability or SB400. Have fun!

That why I use the Nikon 18-70mm and 70-300mm VR on my D90, it gives me more of a range. The 18-70mm Stays on my Camera like 95% of the time and the 70-300mm VR is my wildlife lens.

having some fun with the post processing eh? ;)

None besides cropping.

Experimenting with picture control in the camera, vivid +3 saturation as well as some neutral shots with the sharpness up a shade. ISO set to auto. I like it for scenery shots, but when something living gets in the way it looks a little silly. 100% realism is good and all, but honestly, what fun is that? I like rich colors, especially on a dreary day like today (t-storms all day long)

Right on, you can get similar effects during post processing with greater control, so that things still pop, but also retain their natural appearance!

Something I'm still struggling with / learning to do correctly myself, using Adobe Lightroom Beta.

Here's one I took a few weeks ago and managed to go overboard with vibrance and saturation:

grass is waaaay too green. Love the look on the dogs face though!

Neutral can be pretty blah and is very dependent on your style. It is most important for people pics. Again, dependent on style. I use neutral all the time but in shooting raw I can change anything after the fact in terms of white balance and picture control. Also, better glass pops with excellent sharpness without enhanced settings.

I actually had a talk with Ank about this and he said with the cheaper lenses he really needs to boost his settings also. Whatever works for your style :)

I like rich colors that pop but I try to get that with good cameras, good glass, good lighting, proper exposure and a 100 ISO, which on my camera really deepens the contrast ;-)

All cameras and lenses shoot and process differently. I would just have fun, find what works for you and enjoy the art.

Mine looks a little different though, these are shot with the Nikkor 18-70mm and D90. ;)

Those are great pics Mike. You have a knack for photography. Thanks for sharing them.

Looking good.
I just put up a couple knives for sell to fund a new camera after the terrible pics I took at Blade.Funny how a new camera does very well but after a few months starts getting worse. Its a conspiracy I tell you.
