Well, I got my RAT 5 yesterday! But ... here's the bad news. Guess what it said on the box? ... "RAT 5, Ontario Knife Co!!!"

I got the wrong knife! It's definitely not a RAT RC5. I'm thinking about returning it, but it's actually a lot better than all the knives I own (mainly from Big 5 Sports and cutlery stand at the mall).

Lesson learned. Double check before clicking "commit to buy!!"

The RAT 5 costs about $75, while the RC-5 doubles that at a reputable dealer. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it is usually cause it is.....

I'd return it if possible; I have owned both, and if you think that knife is good, wait till you get your hands on an RC-5.

Get the real deal! If you ended up deciding that you wanted a more conventional thickness (like that of the RAT 5) then go with the RC-6. ;)

I dont understand what all the fuss is about, they are both 1095 steel although the Rat 5 did come out in D2 as well which is worlds better IMHO.

Besides looks the ergonomics are almost the same and if you intend to use it then I dont see the big deal.

The only thing I really want is that RC5 sheath, that just kicks the Rat 5 cheap as china's a...s

Dude that sucks..... I'd return it just because you had your mind set on the RC5 not the RAT 5 .... big difference, nothing wrong with the RAT5 but it is not the RC5 by a long shot .

I have a RAT 5 in D2 steel, and I paid 135 for it. My first RC5 was 135 and my second was cheaper 125, both NIB. There are places that sell the RAT 5 (D2) for 110 or so, and the D2 is now discontinued. I much rather have a RC5 than a RAT 5, D2 sucks to resharpen, and I like the thicker blade on the RC. The sheath on the RAT model is cheap, but works anyway. The RC Eagle brand sheath is much more durable, but I cant wait for the RC5 kydex sheath! If I could I would trade my RAT5 for a RTAK II instead.

The Kydex is coming really soon. We are sold out of the Eagle sheaths now, so if anyone wants an RC-5 with Eagle sheath you had better find one quick at a stocking dealer 'cause no more are shipping from us after the few backorders we have are shipped.

I really like my D2, I just find it takes a scary sharp edge (especially if re-profiled properly) and holds it longer.

Seriously though, when is RAT going to start using different steels ?, I own 3 RC knives now and Id snap that RC5 up in an instant if it was in D2, a little variety seems to spice things up a bit :D

RAT has got the sheaths down perfect, the RC sheaths (kydex on rc4 and Eagle rc5) just do it for me, no improvements necessary there.

We see no need to go to a more expensive steel and heat treat than 1095 for field blades. Besides, that length of a blade is starting to push the limits of D2 if it is heat treated properly.

Jeff sort of answered it, but the short answer is that D2 can be awfully brittle for use in a larger knife. I wouldn't bother with anything over 4" and 3" would be better.

There's nothing wrong with 1095 for a low cost steel, and the Rowen heat treat is miles ahead of most others that use 1095.

I think they could do better with the larger blades, especially the RC10, by going with properly treated 5160, it'd be way tougher and almost as easy to sharpen. But, my RC6 has stood up quite well to the beating I've given it so far.

To the OP, if you really wanted the RC5, then I'll throw in with the rest and see if you can return the RAT 5 and get the RC instead.

Like I always say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I think RC's 1095 is awesome. I would rather have an easier to sharpen blade then so fancy expensive steel. I do like the idea od 5160 for the RC-10.
