Got Myself a Szabo Folder! :Now with dis-assembled pics:

Yes sir it was signed by Szabo.
I guess that didn't help the knife any!

That's pretty dang cool:thumbup:

The inside of the Szabo is not like most knives that we see. I remember seeing a thread somewhere in which someone had disassembled one and it looked crazy.

I used to have one, but the sheer size of the thing made it too ridiculous to carry.

Yeah, I saw a thread in the Spyderco forum where a guy took his apart and it was quite intricate. I'm interested to see what it's like in person.

I'm 100% sure I wouldn't carry the thing, yet every time I see photos I have the urge to buy one. Does that count as a mental illness?

It actually carries pretty well for it's size as long as your pockets are deep enough. I forget it's there sometimes.

Well I've started the journey of taking the Szabo apart. I've gotten to the screws so far and will be updating this thread regularly as I get deeper into the knife.

I have the screws out and am having a time trying to get the liner/scale off. Gotta love these tight tolerances.

Here's some pics of the internals. It's pretty odd to say the least. Makes you wonder how they came up with this mechanism.

Other side of the blade. The self-close Mech. Bar rides in that channel and seats itself in the larger area at the end of the cutout to act as a detent in the closed position.

The self close bar pushes against that small steel plate which rotates with the blade via two small steel pins in the blade. It's in the open position in the pic.

The spring and bar that guides it. These will fly out when you take of the scale they sit under so watch out.

The bar

The many parts that go into this knife.

This wasn't quite as hard to take apart as I was anticipating but it was a bit of a chore. I would NOT recommend anyone who isn't a tinkerer to take this knife apart. A lot could go wrong if you don't know what you're doing. This will also totally void your warranty just so you know.

I'm going to put it back together and wear a more of a noticeable detent track in the blade so I can drill a detent hole. I'll take some process pics of that as well.

Hope you guys somewhat enjoyed seeing the guts of this interesting knife.

Wow that's one of the most complicated internals for a regular pocket knife I've seen :0

Nice takedown Will. Probably one of the more complicated mechanisms/take downs in folders I would imagine. Not sure how O.T.F. switchblades would be though.

Holy Super Size Batman! That makes the Millie look puny! I love the looks, but the Millie has the largest blade that I can legally carry here in Oklahoma.

A smaller version would be awesome!

If there is a length limit where you live, it is probably local. The State Knife Law does not mention length, just the usual mumbo-jumbo about types of knives that are illegal. Myself, I've been carrying 5 inch + folders ever since I moved here in 2002. Not one time have I been hassled for doing so. Now for the last year or so, pretty much been edcing a pair of Spyderco Military's everywhere. But occasionally still slip a big one in my right pocket, Cold Steel Espada or such.

I still do not consider a big knife to be a weapon since I usually have a Kimber 1911 in .45 ACP on me.

Thanks for posting this seelow,I now see what broke in mine.I will have to send it back for repair.

That is one crazy design, awesome shots! Safe to say if I get one of these I will not be taking it apart...

I don't know why anyone would take apart such a complicated folder!

The large size is meant to be used for trapping and blocking techniques as Laci Szabo is a
Martial Artist as well as knife designer.
So, a smaller size would be easy to carry but it would be difficult to employ for the one
handed techniques that Szabo teaches.

Here is a picture of my friend's Szabo Folder. He had no problems taking it apart and putting
it back together.

ok... not going to take the Szabo folder apart... EVER

I have carried it a few times... makes me a little nervous to use it in front of anyone... the Millie that I have carried for years gets me enough hassle as it is....

but it is a wicked-cool beast of a folder!
