:D T3 and only paid $30.00 for it off the rack, at a local store that's gone into BK and is selling everything off for 40-45% off.

The only problem is, the closest to my size that they had is a bit large on me, so will this hat shrink some when I wash it? Following their directions and they say they fit snug after a wash, which might make it perfect. Anyways, got the Khaki color, as all the green were size 7, which is tooooo small.

No, it probably won't. They make a big deal of them being pre-shrunk and all. But g'head and give it a try !!

They also say it's SUPPOSED to fit a bit large. Their guideline is something like being able to put two fingers between your forehead and the hat.

Oh, and if you do wash it, take out the foam pad in the crown of the hat first. Otherwise, it'll get all kinked up.

.

I tried one of those on last weekend for the first time and loved it. If there were like the price you're talking about instead of $75, I'd have picked one up!

Chance of pics?

Great price. I have a khaki one too in the Airflo model. A few weeks later I found them in olive drab which I think is a better color since it hides sweat stains and field use a bit better. Oh well, the lighter color is better for the summer anyway.

Mine is a size larger than I normally get for hats, but I followed their sizing suggestions and got the larger hat. It works great and is very comfortable.

If it is really too large then maybe you can trade with someone or you can see about sewing in a headband of CoolMax to decrease the size.

The classic Tilley shorts are really a must have. They are even better than the hats. They are also guaranteed for life. A hat is one thing, but what other shorts producer promises that? I spent a year living in India and Nepal with them. I have beaten the heck out of them for ten years now and they are just broken in. I have had to replace the buttons and stitch a tear but the seams and pockets are still in tip top shape.

Get yourself a pair. You won't be sorry. Just make sure to ask about sizing. They tend to run small.

I washed the hat as they instructed and it did shrink just a bit. Fits better, but we'll see once it is dried. I removed the flotation pad and string before washing, but put the pad back in about an hour afterwards.

I didn't think to ask if they had any of the other Tilley gear. Being a cargo shorts kind of man during the summer months, I probably should make it back over there and take a peek.

I am a big fan of Tilley hats and wear a T1 or LT6 almost every day. The T1 seems to shrink a wee bit every time it is washed, but it stretches back very quickly. The LT6 does not seem to shrink at all. The foam flotation pads are long gone, destroyed by getting scrunched up in everyday use. I use the gentle cycle on the washing machine with hot water (along with other clothes) and let them dry in the open air.

Hey LOngbow..

How did you put the string back in ??

I have mine so there is a loop at the back thats fixed in position by knots. You put the hat on and slip the loop over the back of your head like a Drill Instructors Smokey the Bear hat.

The front part of the string I usually just keep inside the hat, however if it's Really windy I will put it under my chin.

In that position Katrina wouldn't be able to blow it off..

On the Grommets where the string comes through the front of the hat I have a small 3" OAL Stainless Damascus Scraper in a tiny concealex sheath, on the other side I have a very small Ferro rod on a tiny piece of Antler tine (although I snapped it two weeks ago)

They are Excellent hats and a Great Canadian product...

Normark, I put both strings behind my head unless it gets windy, when I have one loop in front and the other behind.

Longbow, a Tilley hat is worn a little lower than most to help keep it on your head, so if it seems a little bigger than your other hats, it's probably just right. The cotton Tilley's use fabric that has been boiled, so it won't shrink much.

Eric, I'll set it up like you have yours. There is always a coastal breeze here, so that should work well for me.

BTW, your sheath arrived yesterday, been meaning to email and let you know. I like what you did with it. Thanks. :D

DaleW, yeah it feels WAY TO BIG on my head, but was just a tad better after washing, but I'll wait to see once it's dry.

Hey Guys..

Longbow...

Yaa give that a try I think you'll like it...

You'll have to play with the length of the string in the back...
You want it fairly snug, but not that it's bothersome..
Put the knots on the inside of the grommets that way it will always stay the same.. The chin strap make just long enough to fit it over your chin..I've used it before in a bass boat doing 45-50 mph and it stays put...

If you want a nice little hat knife, get one of those Buck Hartsooks..Very light and handy to have...

In fact,, if you do decide to get one, I'll build you a custom sheath to put on your Tilley and send it to you.. Another Awesome little knife to use is a Simonich Bitterroot.. Would be Absolutely perfect for a hat knife. Can do one of those for ya too.. :) Just let me know if you want one and it's yours Brother..

Just gotta give me a couple weeks to get things straightened around with my dad..

LMK..

am I the only one who doesn't Know what a tilley is ?

They are a brand of hats that are guaranteed for life. They are very lightweight and cost a lot, but now that I have one, I think it was worth the money. I made it my birthday present for myself last year.

They float, repel rain, and block sunlight. They also have lightweight straps you can use that make it very diffcult for wind to blow the hat off. The original model looked to geeky for me. It was too floppy and the ventilation hole grommets were to big in my opinion. The more recent models seem more practical.

The company is a little goofy in their marketing  which does not appeal to sportsmen. They target the "adventurer" who spends lots of money going to exotic places in the world. Nothing wrong with that, but the marketing makes the hats appear to be more fashion statement rather than excellent field hats. All the same, the hats speak for themselves.

I use mine for hiking in the summers. It is much cooler to wear than a ball cap. I have an old breezer hat and the Tilley model I purchased (the Airflo) is lighter and cooler than that hat too. It is becoming my favorite summer hat. Sooner or later I may risk using it for yardwork too. I just don't want to get it beat up looking quite yet.

Check them out.

Hey Guys...

It seems that an elephant like a zookeepers hat and ate it....

Several days later the hat came out the other end..
It was washed and was good as new...

Good as "new"? Yech. I would have a hard time wearing a hat that passed through an elephant's gastrointestinal tract. :barf:

Hey Brother, I'll be putting an order in for the Buck in a couple days and I would be honored if, when you have time, you would make it a good sheath for the tilley. Then a bit later, I'll be asking you to make me up a sheath for my Becker Necker.

BTW, for others out there that are looking for a multi carry system for their knives. Being right handed, I like to carry my sheath knives on my right side, but as if for left hand cross draw, so that it angles forward and it is possible to do that with Erics sheaths. Well designed carry system. Good stuff.

Apparently Tilley offered to replace it for the guy (for the advertising value) but he refused. What was his name? Something Grylls?

Doc

"Grylls" must translate into English to be "gross." I think I would have taken the company up on its offer to replace the hat.

I bet he picked up a lot of girls..."You see this hat? This very same hat passed through an elephants bum and I'm still wearing it".

My hat was a tad loose when dry and a tad tight when wet so I was glad I bought one slightly oversized. Loved that hat until I lost it in a mall of all places :(
