ive got some ideas on paper as you could tell from the title and all i need to do is get input on if these are too ambitious for my first knives ever... i think ill make them out of 1084 , 5160 or some 0-1. but im kind of at a loss as to what kind of grinds il need to do thoes blades in ie. flat, convex...ect. ect... As of this point i can really only do a flat im suspecting as to the fact ive got a 2x42 crafstman belt sander and a few hand tools. And again are some of these designs a little above my skill level and if so, please point me in the right direction. It would be much appreciated.. oh yeah.. sorry for the spun pics and the quality, i scanned them in.

Thanks,

Andrew

The only thing that looks problematic to this noob is the recurve.. other than that (and the tanto, depending on how you want to do the aesthetics, now that I think about it) I don't see any issues.

hows the best way to go about the recurve? because actually, thats the knife i really wanted to do first. maby i should reconsider eh?

Andrew none of them are going to be too tough. I would do a convex grind on the recurve I think that it would be easier than doing it with a flat grind.

The kobe tanto style knife im not crazy about and is a little harder in my opinion than the others. You have it maked #1 . the other designs are nice. kellyw

You can build anything you want to. Don't take no for an answer.
Don't say,[ well, thats good enough]-Do the darn thing right , hold your head up and be proud of it. Just my feelings, Jerry

BTW love that recurve--in any of the 3 steels

You're missing a bevel on the tanto, and that tip is a bit severe. Use 1084 unless you've got a kiln for HT
read all the stickies, good luck

all the number means is that i drew it out first, its not really a preference. Im actually more into the camp style kind of knife than anything. Seems like a more useful utility tool than any other of the designs.

thanks

bill,

Is there a good tutorial in here about making the convex grind? I really haven't looked but i would thought ide ask. and i never thought about making a convex grind on that thanks for the advise.

and thank you everyone else for your input

I have a HSS saw blade its about 14 inches in diameter that I dug out of the trash at work, it had a chunk busted out of it.The blade is one solid piece of steel its not like a carpenter saw blade that has inserts brazed onto the blade. You could make 4-8 knives out of this piece depending on how long you like your blade. If you are interested let me know,I would like a series of pictures of you making knives that I could put on my website.

I don't know where ther is an online tutorial but I do know where you can get some help:)

I like the designs, some tough grinds though, you can purchase 1/4 thick hardwoods and its handy to make your first from wood, lets you get a feel for how the grind will go. I agree on the convex on the recurve, I cant see how I would flat grind but convex should be doable with some care.
