Got the itch for a Scandi ground bushcraft knife

Looks great! I can't wait to see it finished.
Did you figure out your grind angles then?

You are probably going for a more scientific and reliable way, but what I do is figure out how far back I need to go to get the angle I want with a little geometry, then I trace a line parallel with the edge the proper distance away. Then I grind so that I finish the grind at the center of the thickness of the blade and were the line is on the side of the blade. Do it for both sides. Worked out pretty well for the last one I did, of course it is hand ground so it isn't completely factory perfect...

Of course I've only done two knives and don't quite have all the proper equipment so perhaps there are much better ways of doing it.

I simply got an aluminium angle and vice gripped the blade to it. This kept the blade at a perfectish 90 and tilted my platen IN OVER THE REST and slowly went at it. MIne is 10 degrees so I hope it isnt too thin.

Dang, Brian, you doing a scandi? Might have to wait on that Companion I was thinking about picking up.... :D

he he - let the grind get some testing done around camp next month :) I am hoping the angle wont be too steep.

Awesome! Man when I get a job I'm going to have to invest in some real tools.
I don't think 10 degrees is too thin in general but may be for your tasts, if so you could also try 12.5 and 15 degrees, but I think anything over 15 degrees for scandi grind is too thick.

I hope you are planning on posting the final product!

oh yeah! I hope to finish it this wekend:thumbup: I HOPE.

THis isnt a heavy duty do all style knife I dont think. Strictly cutting - no batoning, chopping.....CUTTING:thumbup: Oh, Did I say cutting?

Very cool looking Brian! I can't wait to meet you at Blade Show.

very cool, reliable setup. i have ground a few scandis, but i just do it freehand/eyeball. i mostly look at how long the bevel is...if the bevels are the same length, and ground without an extra bevel, then they should be the same length.

Man I am digging this knife!!! 2nd knife I have given a satin non etched finish. This is 0-1 so I know this look wont last but the stained blade will tell a story!!

I'll have it!! heck....get you a companion there if you can!!!

That looks great Brian. Even with the Scandi grind and bushcraft shape, it still retains the signature Goode look to it.
