Thank you, having trouble figuring out how much Steel I need to make a specific sized knife. Or, vice versa, what size knife can I make from this piece of Steel that I have? Do you guys have a formula? Do you figure in the starting weight and a Target finish weight of a knife? I usually draw out a knife that I want to make, then have trouble selecting a piece to achieve that. Thanks for your time.

Assuming you are not forging. Draw the knife you want on the steel you have. Or get a large enough piece of steel that your drawing fits on.

The next question is how much forging have you done? Assuming you know your way around an anvil, then i'd say forge it 1/8"-1/4" thicker than your blade

Initially, You can form things of modeling clay. Start off with it same size as your steel, then form it to whatever is desired.
This can give a good idea of what can be made of a given size of steel. For example, how wide & thick a blade can be forged from a 20mm round bar.
After some experience, its easier to visualise what shapes can be made from a given starting piece.
