Well I got tired of waiting on Kabar to make some Becker handles in some decent colors. Decided to try my hand at making my own.
I used the two extra sets of the light green handles that came with my bk29s. I kept the slightly darker sets for future experiments.
They turned out amazing and so far the color is holding up really well.
The process isn't really a new thing, I'm sure its been done here before.
Here are your simple DIY instructions.
- Heat up enough water to submerge the handles on a old coat hanger.
- Dump hot water into disposable pan/bowl.
- Add the proper ratio of RIT dye to water used.
- Soak handles for about an hour (maybe less, maybe more, just depends on how light/dark you want it) and agitate water every 10 min or so.
- Rinse with water and you're done!
It was super easy and if a dummy like me can do it, I'm sure you guys can do it even better.
Here is a comparison between the light neon green, the new slightly darker green that comes with the bk29, and my new OD green one after the dyeing process.
Here is the slightly darker green next to the dyed brown and OD green.
I used the liquid dye for the brown and the powder dye for the dark green. They both worked fine, not sure I would recommend one over the other.
This was about 30 minutes with the dark green RIT dye
This was about the 40 minute mark on the brown set. I probably should have pulled them out then. They would have been a better match to the tweener sets.
And here are some shots of them on my bk4 and modded bk29.
