The wait is over. I finally got my TTTKK (I am momentarily losing track which T's belong to which, among Tactical, Talonite, and Talmadge)

. Thanks Trace.

Here's a picture. Sorry that I'm still a poor knife photographer.

Haven't done much work with it yet except on apples and peaches. One thing I would say is I'm hooked by this talonite thing already. It came shaving sharp. Of course slicing a few fruits won't dull it, but a real joy for a lazy guy like me is that I don't have to wash the knife right after use. It's still covered with apple juice at the time I'm typing this.

I'm close to this TTTKK more than ever imagined. No need for the greasy film oil or that sticky Sentry Solution between the knife and me. Just wash, wipe it dry,and that's all. Gee, my next knife is more likely to be another Talonite. My wife would also enjoy it for kitchen use.

No need to comment on craftsmanship. As expected for any knife from THR, it's just superb. This particular knife is light and well-balanced in the hand. Maybe I have to credit this also to Mr.T in the name.

Really great work.

I think talonite is better alternative to ceramic. I lost my faith in ceramic two weeks ago when I played around with one in the bathroom. (Don't ask me why I brought it in there, coz I have no idea

). While I was spinning and twirling it around unconsciously, it slipped from my hand onto the floor. I picked the EOD up, but the tip decided to continue its stay on the floor and not go up with the rest. Talonite doesn't seem to be that brittle, though I haven't done that test, yet.

I'd better leave exhaustive tests to other people. I think Joe should get one by now.

Cheers,
Dew.

Dew -- You gotta test it out yourself! Take it for a spin and let us know what you think.

I got my 5.5" TTTKK yesterday. The edge is nice and thin, did some chopping yesterday and it held up fine, not a hint of chipping or rolling yet. Will write up a full review in a few weeks!

Joe

Sounds great! Mine should be arriving in the next week or two. Can't wait to use it. We'll have to compare notes and write up a comprehensive, multi-user review.

AJ

Great, thanks alot guys!

Bad enough that I, too, was lured by the tempting siren song of the BG-42 TKK (this was before the first two T's came along), then rounded out my gathering with an earlier ATS-34 LUK. Now I feel myself drawn to the TTTKK, like matter to the event horizon of a black hole. How do I explain this one to the spousal unit? Of course, with two extra T's in the name, I can say I'm overdue for an "update". I'll have to think about this one.

In any event, I do really love my TKK. It's the bomb, it's the whip, it's all that, a bag of chips and a bowl of dip.

You guys are gonna love those TTTKKs! The blade is exactly the same on my Chimera which I've had for quite a while (Trace's first Talonite knife)

!

No doubt in my mind that we'll have some more Talonite converts!!!!

I have a Talonite Chimera on order right now. Decided polished blue G10 would be an interesting handle colour. I am very excited about it!

Clay, I mean this with all the respect and admiration in the world. I think I hate you.

Please post here or send pics to drool over when you get the knife, Clay. Any order from me will have to wait until after the "great house hunt". Of course, then I'll have more room to store knives...

I don't wanna wait 'til my review before I tell you this. I got mine with polished burgundy micarta handles and mosaic pins. It is gorgeous! If part of your mission for this knife is to be a relatively innocuous-looking travel knife, consider mosaic pins for sure. And burgundy micarta, if you're going for micarta over g-10.

Ive got Trace some property picked with a shop already on it, about 100 yards from mine. Now if I can just get him up here to Montana we could start Knifemakers Row!

Sounds like you have the Talonite fever. You are going to love the knife.

Yeah Rob. It's a new kind of irresistable nite fever. Why don't we try talonite for all various animal attacks out there?

I also browse your cute kanji every day. When will you or Dr.Ron start accepting orders?

Looks to me like the trend of talonite at this time is towards smaller utility knives or folders (or is it because of price?). Is there a size limitation for talonite stock? I just wonder how it would perform as a chopper, say a 9 - 10" camp knife, if it can be done. (In Blade magazine I read that it's less ductile than steel?)

Hey Dew, go to the Hoods Woods web site and join the Hoodlums Forum, lots of great stuff there, Ron and Karen are taking orders on the Kanji in A-2 and Talonite, the forum folks are getting the first chance. there is a thread in the welcome to Hoodlums on the Kanji. These knives have been on order for quite a while and some will be delivered in late Oct or early Nov.

The demand for knives in Talonite is raising every day, I am swamped with oreders! In fact I am comming out with an OEM manufactured model to try to satify the demand. As soon as a few more things fall in place I will make an official announcement.

The trend is towards the smaller utility knives and folders due to the cost of the material. At $160 per pound avg, I understand why, however I have many large Talonite knives on order. I did have a customer knock a chip out of a big blade chopping Elk bones, but I think I can overcome that with some edge geometry improvments. The next issue of Tactical Knives has a lot on Talonite in it, including articles on large and small knives.
Size limitation is not a factor, although 1/4" thick stock is special order and is around $200 per pound. As far as not being as ductile, for the most part true, but it depends on the steel you compare it to, it will be more ductile than say D-2 at Rc 60, and less ductile that quadruple quenched 52100 that has been quenched in the urine of a red headed Scandinavian boy and sub zero quenched for 30 days at the exact magnetic center of the North Pole and tempered 16 times by suspending over an active Hawian volcano, and then heat treated! ha ha ha

Couldnt resist a bit of rant on hype there....... Anyway, werent we talking about Trace Rinaldi?

Rob. Thanks for all the answers and introducing the hoodsforums. I went there last night. Wow! interesting stuff.
Amazingly, there are someone named Joe and Cliff in there too, and they are chopping dimes with talonite.

Interesting to read that Talonite edge could reach RC 70 while doesn't require heat treatment. I hope that would make a maker's life a little easier (which means more knives for us). Ideally, choose an appropriate size talonite stock and just grind off the part that is not a knife?
smile.gif
Sorry I don't know much about the process; just wonder with that hardness already on the stock why it isn't tough on grinding belt.

Dew.

P.S. Don't worry about Trace. From my experience Trace's threads drift all the time.

Be careful, talonite doesn't reach 70 Rc! I think I remember what Rob wrote, and he probably said something like: it BEHAVES as if it's 70 Rc. In actually, if the hardness is measured using the Rockwell test, it comes out in the low 40s or 50s as I recall. Which basically illustrates the limitations of the Rockwell test -- the way it measure hardness is not relevant to a material like talonite. Steel is typically a hard matrix with harder carbides; talonite is a soft matrix with really hard carbides. Rockwell essentially measures the hardness of the matrix, but its the carbides that let talonite cut for so long.

Joe

I concur with Joe about that burgundy color but it is available in G10!!! My Chimera sports burgundy G10 lightly beadblasted for improced purchase. Trace added a nifty mosaic pin which dresses the knife up nicely. The burgundy G10 is not a super dark or rich wine color at all.... it kinda resembles a light wine colored wood in bright sunlight. Very, very classy!

Methinks Rob has been in the sun too long! That parody of quenching hype had me rolling on the floor!

I did like the look of the burgundy, but thought blue G-10 would just be a little different.

I would like a burgundy G-10 or micarta handled knife, if for no other reason, because it would match my truck!
