So I'm really new at this whole world of knife making and was wondering if anyone was around the Hernando County area of Florida that wouldn't mind me shadowing them in their workshop. I work and will be going back to school for my bachelors but would really like to see a smith/knifemaker at work. IF I were to ask to do anything within the shop myself I would provide any and all consumables including steel, abrasives, etc. I have consumed hundreds or even thousands hours worth of videos and reading material on the subjects of blacksmithing, metal working, etc and just would like to see the practical aspect at work. In exchange I have no qualms about cleaning the shop or being a go-fer.
My SECOND question. I've noticed a small interest building towards working with tatara(japanese bloom) steel and crucible steel. Would it be worthwhile to produce small amounts to either sell or give to be used by blacksmiths or bladesmiths? I'm not looking to get a profit so much as get practical knowledge in dealing with metallurgy.
Any thoughts or advice will be greatly appreciated and I already realize these are probably beginners questions that may be unrealistic but I'd rather ask a question and get an answer than never ask the question and learn nothing.
