I finally got the disc grinder setup this weekend. It is a .5 horse dc motor with the controller at the link below. A friend of mine did the wiring with all new materials we purchased at HD yesterday. Today I turned the unit on and had one hand on the arbor of the motor (no disc on yet), I placed my other finger on the reversing switch which was on break. When I threw the switch I got a significant shock. Nothing that felt too serious but definatly got my attention. I guess the questions is whether something was wired wrong, something wrong with the motor or did I commit a fundamental error in touching the two parts at the wrong time?

Both the motor and the switch box should be grounded - that would have prevented your shock. Instead it would have caused the fault to short and (hopefully) throw a breaker. Or let the smoke out...

My guess is, a brush is conducting to the frame. Accumulated carbon dust can do that.

I don't know where your motor operates, but my 4HP DC motor is 180 volts to ground which, if flowing across your chest (hand to hand) can kill you quickly. I'd be real careful, something isn't right.

Unplug it or turn off the breaker. Don't mess with it until someone who knows what they are doing fixes the problem. A short or a floating ground is not a thing to ignore.
