I just got back from the junk yard. Got a bunch of door coil spring that should make about 50 feet of 1/4 round bar for small tongs. A screw jack and a piece of mild steel just cause. All this was free as long as I take some scrap down to them once in a while.

Now the big haul came when I found a 40lb+ bench vise. I'll know if its for sale next time I'm down there but while I was talking to Joe he told me they had 3 post vises! The two larger ones they wanted to keep but for a $20 bill the smaller (50-60lb) vice was mine! :D:D

Anybody else score some good shop tools from the junk yard lately?

fjrst of all, i guess hi y'all would be the place to start. From there, i am relitivly new to bladesmithing with only apx. 50 or so fixed blades(finished not broken or destroyed from testing, sence the hammer is my only teacher) under my belt, and this is my first time on this forum. So Iwill get to the question, how does one get involved or started with A.B.S. and start becoming a titled smith.:o O,and thumbs way up on the vice.

It looks like it is made of brass and copper! Wouldn't that be the find of the century!

Now that would be worth some serious bucks if it was! Its definitely hand made, the rough forgings show that. I'm not sure if its steel or wrought though, most likely steel.

Two weeks ago I brought home a bandsaw from the farm junk yard. 8 years ago it was used to cut an 80lb salt block in half, after that it stopped running(big supprise!). 3 hours of work and $60 later...

Consider yourself lucky. Our sue happy society has caused junk yards around here to not allow you to take scrap from their yards. "too much liability"

Pretty nice post vise for $20. it will out perform any new $20 vise on the market today :)

Yea I'm extremely lucky. My grandfather has known the owner for about 70 years now so they are pretty relaxed about letting me drive out and dig through the scrap.
