Gotta match?

Sounds like a very unrealistic situation however I would just use the match but first spend the time getting the fire setup correct so even this doesn't go flop.

You can't envision ever running out matches????

In compromising weather, I am splitting the match. If you practice it a couple times it is pretty easy to split. If you do mess up in the splitting process it comes in the form of putting too much material on one side.

My rationale goes beyond the match itself functioning properly. I would rather have a second chance for the other variables such as wind, rain, poor/wet tinder/kindling.

How to light a match including the splitting of a paper match...

Thanks Abo - you are the first person to side on the splitting end of things. I was expecting a more equal split between members. Guess I was wrong.

No I can't imagine a realistic survival situation in which I had only one paper match and had to make that decision. On the flip side I like this thread just the same. :) Also I agree that messing around with them seems like it could be a problem though don't often use paper matches anymore.

Thats cool. I do carry matches, but they are the REI-storm proof ones. 8 of them in a match safe. They are non-splittable, but also very robust at starting fires. I also carry a firesteel and a primitive fire kit which is what I use to start most of my fires.

The thread topic came about as I was thinking about how many folks demonstrate the paper match splitting technique. Truth is, I only have one book of paper matches. Its one of those 'Get a career' booklets with a list of vocations offered by some incorrigible academic fly-by-night operations. One of the vocations listed is 'Rehabilitation councellor' with a little box to tick by it. That is my wife's profession and when I tease her, I like to pull it out and say she got her match-book degree.....
