Grade 7 student knife builds

They did a fantastic job. Must have had a great teacher.
What a cool experience for these kids.

That's fantastic Randy. I really like the stag Handle with the bolster. That was fun helping out before
I would like to get you to come and do a day with us this fall if it works for you Shane. The kids really liked your visit last time. This crew was asking why they didn't get an expert to come in and help them like the year before. Guess I don't rank up there in the knowledge department like you! I have more questions and new things I want to learn about too.

Wow, what a great school. Its good to know we're still raising some boys to grow up to be men.
You better watch out because my girls might straighten you out here! The boys and girls all become pretty well rounded competent learners and outdoor savvy. We did firelighting with flint and steel on a pounding rain day recently. 20 pairs of kids...11 cooking fires got going. 7 of them by girls...4 by boys. I didn't point it out but the girls did! On light drizzle day or better I would have 20 fires.
I keep looking over my shoulder hoping this job isn't just a dream.

It's just incredible! I'm just learning to make knives, and for some reason, I can not do it at all. By the way, I read an interesting thesis on the creation of knives https://paperleaf.ca/, when I saw her was very surprised! So I advise you to read.

The stag handled one looks really professional, damn.
Though I gotta ask: Don't these kids get taught stuff like maths etc., or is this school additional to "regular" school?

Sweet Jesus! They are all going to die at any second!!! The have knives!!!

(Jk)

That’s pretty awesome!!
Incidentally I’ve got some friends who live in chillawack(sp?), pretty close to abbotsford.

I wish more schools would teach self reliance, build character, and foster maturity. I skipped a lot of school to work, that drive and work ethic did more for me than sitting in classroom filling out a worksheet or watching a poorly produced movie while the teacher read a magazine.

All of our reading, writing, math etc are done in context within the activities we do. So their math happens when they calculate the speed of the river, or graph how many salmon are in it, or calculate the average number of eggs that are in the salmon we help harvest....etc. Same with the reading and writing. These kids did a lot of writing and reading about knives as they built them. They have calculated the cost, weighed the wet handle material, dried handle material, and stabilized and calculated the percentage change.

This is their regular school, every day all year. We just learn in context through activity instead of memorizing random facts that they aren't using.

Same with me. I learned a lot more doing hands on stuff than I ever did doing work sheets that had no meaning to me. I understood McGyver because I lived all that as a kid!

I know! We had a class visit us and the teacher lost her crap when she realized half my kids had knives on them. She was convinced that it was a province wide automatic suspension for these children and was sure we were all going to lose our jobs. It went further downhill when a bear showed up at the river to have a few salmon and I had the kids group up and move up to the hill a bit where we watched it fish. The teacher was beside herself and felt we were all in mortal danger. She was rather sure I had a death wish and wanted to call 911 so the police could come and kill the bear. She didn't believe that we see bears 20-30 times a year and never have problems nor do we call anyone.

I love my job.

Yes, Chiliwack is close.
