What explanation would you give for my classmates in the late 1950s who couldn't read without moving their lips, write a coherent, logical sentence, or spell without the aid of a cheerleader squad?

"Today's generation don't value the art of writing and correct composition of sentences anymore. "

Ah the dilemma. "The jury is . . ." or "The jury are. . . ."
