Grammar Question. Then or Than?

Hi cockroachfarm-

I'd rather have a fun discussion about proper grammar...

Amazing! Here we are discussing correct grammar and spelling, in another forum they're talking about art appreciation, and in another forum they're posting soup recipes!

What a great place to hang out!

The correct word to use would be "than" because it is a term used to compare and can answer the question "what", ie: you are comparing shipping tomorrow instead of today or next week. "Then" would be used if it could answer the question "when" as it relates to time.

Bango. (like bingo, but stolen from "The Air Up There.")

Wouldn't it be "midget pirate lesbians?"

Sorry, couldn't resist...

In my humble opinion, go with 'than'. Tis correct, tis proper and sounds a whole lot better :)

I have a degree in English literature, and I teach language arts. "Than" is the correct choice.

Did someone actually write "irregardless"?:(

Yes, someone did. But with tongue so firmly in cheek that for those of us familiar with the author, it didn't even require an extra smilie! ;)

(nice one, Dave! )

I must apologize for my previous ill conceived response to a serious question. Here is my take on the issue. I wasn't very good at English in school, so I defer to Hondo.3 and others more knowledgeable in this area for advice.

Now then. When, then, is then better than than? Then is better than than when then is earlier than now. Now then. When, then, is than better than then? If now is later than then, then it is better than than then. Now then, of course in leap years the whole thing is reversed. Sorry, what was the question?

Tell the person who was adamant that it was "then" that he/she NEEDS to go back to grade school. It's one thing if you don't know something; it's something else to be completely wrong about something and spread your ignorance through the masses of people less obdurate than yourself. Woo, breaking out the fancy vocab.

Than is for comparisons; it's true that "then" is for time but only when it is the 'connecting' adverb. (If this happened, then that happens.) Since 'tomorrow' is the point of reference, you are comparing the time of shipping to 'tomorrow'. It's like saying, "I left my house earlier than Jane."

(Why yes, I am an anal retentive grammar freak despite the fact I can't remember proper grammar terms :p)

Please chalk that one up to my being a new guy.
