Thank you all for the kind words.
All too often we get too tangled up in the gear game, and forget about using our heads and a few things we should have in our pockets all the time. It's a funny thing, but in my lifetime, what few true emergencies I've encountered, has been dealt with using no super equipped bug out bag, or survival kit, but just a few things from everyday life. I recall my old man telling me that the two pound lump of gray stuff between our ears is always with us. Make use of it.

those first few sentences choked me up too. I never really got to know my grandpa, he died when I was four. It's hard to miss what you never had, but I do every day. He died of a brain aneurism, believed (by me) to be brought on by drinking. I will never drink, I want to see my grandkids grow up (when I have them).
I don't even have his knife. It is currently in the possession of one of my uncles.

Another great one Carl. I had a really stressful final exam this morning and read this story just before it. It really helped to calm my nerves. I'm studying to be a physical therapist and this story was just what I needed. Thank you
