Grandfathers’ Knives

I have only very few things from my dad, no knives. And nothing from my grandfather. My grandfather on my moms side was a moonshiner in the 1950s. He wasn’t a very nice man by most accounts and left nothing.

My grandmother however was a very nice lady and I have a few things of hers. Including her leatherman pst. Unfortunately though, I broke the pliers and when I returned it, they modified the handles for the repair with new style pliers head (if I had known, I would have repaired it myself with a donor tool to keep it original). When my house burnt in 2015, I had that leatherman in my pocket, as well as my dads zippo.

My grandfather passed away in 2012. Here's his everyday pocket knife (top) with the one I've been carrying lately. I think it's just a generic gas station knife, stamped Japan, with 440 Stainless. He was a handyman and did woodworking as a hobby. I've been wanting to display it in a shadow frame or something.

My paternal grandfather was a hardware man and died before I was born. My maternal grandfather (Pop to his grandchildren) was an electrician, he gave this Ulster Old Timer to my Dad sometime in the late 60's or early 70's (per my Dad). My Dad kept it for years in a tacklebox and gave it to me about 10 years ago. I have one shotgun and one rifle that came from my paternal grandfather's hardware store, and some tools that belonged to my maternal grandfather, but this is the only pocketknife that I have that was owned by either one of my grandfathers. Any hunting adventures that go with that knife?

None from me...the knife is in retirement now. However, I'm quite sure my grandfather used it for hunting and fishing and who knows what else. They lived in Montana for many years, and hunting and fishing were a huge part of my dad's upbringing.

Thanks to all for the pics. Most were all serious "using knives" back in the 30s-40s I would imagine. Interesting to see these old timers.

When I was a lad we lived in Ohio. My paternal grandparents lived outside of Pittsburgh. My granddad was born in Hungary in 1898. Fought in France during WW1 and passed at 86 years old. Grandma lived to be 100. We'd visit quite frequently and I slept in big second floor bedroom with a huge closet. My sister and I would hide and root around in the boxes in that closet. I recall finding a pocket knife one day, and wondering whether I should put it in My pocket. We'll I didn't, and kind of wish I had..... My memory from 60+ years brings back images of a knife similar to this (picture not mine).

When my dad passed, a few days shy of his 82nd birthday, in 2005, this one was his EDC. He is grandfather to my sons and daughters, great grandfather to my grandchildren and great great grandfather to my great grandson..... Did I get that right? ;)

Top: My paternal Grandfather’s knives. 3 Schrades and a Griffon. I think Phil (far left) and the boys are going drinking but I can’t be sure. I know they didn’t work in those clothes.

Bottom: My paternal great Grandfather’s knife purchased in London sometime in the late 1800’s before he emigrated to Canada. Arthur with his horses.
