Granite slab?

Truth be told I don't have a granite slab. Do I need one? I was just looking through Craigslist and noticed a guy was selling a 70 lb 3"x12"x18" granite surface plate grade B tolerance .0001 with a corner cracked off. It also has the certificate of inspection. He's asking $25 OBO, I figure I can live with the cracked corner. I checked the home depot and they sell 12x12 granite tiles but they're only like 1/2" thick.

The one I saw on craigslist seems like it might be a good score but I have no idea. Then again do I need to worry about moving 70 lb rock around my work area as I don't have a ton of room as it is.

So should I get myself a granite slab? Is the 1/2 tile from the depot the best way to go? Do places that sell granite counter tops ever have pieces that they find unuseable

I know it's a pretty good price. I'm just wondering if I need to hump around a 70 lb rock when I need to move it. Are there any somewhat lighter options I might be able to consider?

If you do any leather work, it is an invaluable thing to have.

100!

Fletch, common that's not heavy. I have one the same weight. Someone who actually knows what he is talking about will surely chime in but I'd think that if they make it that size there must be a good reason for it.

They have 12X12X1.5 granite slabs at Tandy for 40 bucks, not sure what grade tolerance that are, but they say they weight 22lbs they also have marble in the same dimensions but no weight listed. I am heading over to Tandy later this week and I will find out if they know the tolerance on them if you would like. I can't remember if you have a Tandy near you or not but if you don't there is an extra $8 shipping charge because of the weight

Sometimes Enco has a free shipping deal, when they do this is the type of thing to get.
Brand new surface plate with certs and free shipping. for the same price your getting a cracked one for. Just sign up for the emails from Enco and they will let you know when they are running the deals.
Just a suggestion.

Amazingly I can't get Enco to load on my browser (firefox). Worth looking out for though. I guess I can load it up in IE :barf:

Everytime the page comes up it says I'm not allowing scripting. I have it set to allow cookies. I can't find anything to actually prevent it from coming up. I went there in IE and signed up.

If the guy will take 15 for the slab I'll likely get it. I mean it's big enough that I can live with a corner missing I guess. If not maybe just wait till Enco runs a special.

For that price, I would definitely pick it up. I'm no maker but I know that surface plate has to be much flatter than a tile from a home supply store.

Only problem is I don't have a Grizzly location near me. By the time shipping is done it's a $74 slab. I know he originally listed it at 30 because I saw it there a few days ago. Chances are he won't say yes immediately to 10, he'll go 20 and we'll settle at 15 anyway. I'm just going the take it or leave it route right off the bat.

WOW! I think Enco is running free shipping now too!! Looks like I'll be the new owner of a 12x18 slab. Looks like Grade A is backordered...so I'll be getting B. I don't think the differences between A and B for us are going to be an issue...and it's $12 cheaper!

And...holy crap. 3' x 4' x 6" granite slab? I don't even WANT to think about what that thing might weigh!!!
