Granite Surface

I bought the Grizzly 18x24x3" Granite plate. The shipping cost me more than the plate! Its soooo heavy too. Really curdles my cheese to lift it.

Hey... I know a guy that has a 24x36x6" Starrett Pink Granite plate with stand for $250. Its very nice. Its very heavy. Sure would be a great conversation piece. If anyone is interested here in the Northeast, I'll be glad to turn you on to him. Just email me.

Would a piece of Granite gotten from a tombstone maker or stone fabricator be actually trued flat enough? The Grizzly plates and other inspection plates ive seen are tested and trued with within very small tolerances. Does this make a differnce?

they can be checked with a dial indicator easy enough
but I think they should be ok for the hand sanding
the one I use has been great
I have a Granite inspection plate I don't even use most the time
I like the bigger surface..and it's pink granite, you
can see the dust better to clean it.:)

Enco and Grizzly offer cheap shipping on the 9"x12"x3" plate because it weighs less than 80 pounds, so it's sent by UPS ground. Over 80 pounds and it's truck delivery, over $50 typically.

Enco has it for $14.95 right now .

I just ordered one from Grizzly, they still have the $5.95 shipping on these! For the price I decided not to worry about trying to save a few dollars and find it even cheaper from a floor or counter place. Also this way I know it is just about perfectly flat, so I can't blame it if my scales aren't getting flat.

I just called a Granite and marble place locally and found a piece of granite 18x18 1 inch thick for 24.95! polished

Lynn mentioned using a piece of glass. I would suggest going to a place that repairs photocopiers and ask for one from a unit that is beyond repair. The glass tops in photocopiers are tempered and a lot tougher. It should be free too :D .

one final question on this subject, the surface just has to be flat correct? can be saw cut and not polished? Reason I was askin is I found a decent deal on an unfinished(saw cut, not polished) but straight piece of granite thats 20"x20" and 1.5" thick for 25.00 and wanted to make sure that it would work.

in the saw cut valleys you could lose some of the sand paper benefit
if you know what I mean, polished would be better.

hmm...you might be right....polished jumps to 60 or so...but still not bad for 20"x20"

I don't think you would like that in the long run. If you want it for sanding flats, do you really need anything bigger than a 9"x12"? The size of a sheet of sandpaper? Plus even these cheap import granites are probably a lot more accurate than what a flooring or tombstone maker wouold have or need.

True, was just trying to avoid having one shipped, but the 5.95 deal doesnt sound too bad from Grizzly
