gransfors bruks hunter's axe.

thanks! since i'm not a hunter yet i have no use for the rounded poll...will your father use it to skin the elk? i'd be curious how well it works.

he says he will, I haven't heard anything from him yet :)

i updated post #3 with in-the-woods chop-off....so now i like them equally for different reasons. it's going to be a lot harder for me to decide which to get rid off :o

Picked up a gransfors hunter a couple months ago returned to lee valley with a little damage to the top edge and initials on the bottom handle and sheath in sharpie for sub 100$ canadian!!!

5 minutes with a file and ceramic and its good to go.

I have the wetterlings hunters version and it has been a great tool for 5 or so years, fit and finish is better on the gransfors and diff handle as OP compared to wildlife sfa etc.

Gonna put it through some work this year and compare the two.

BTW the Husquavarna small splitting axe is a great splitter if looking for a cheaper alternative, does not have the steel collar but has special wide cheeks with an airspace before the head to really pop it open.

Made by wetterlings, its my new car camping axe.

Upnorth....beat em, their axe's and can take it.

i still need to handle a wetterlings...let us know how those two compare :)

Thanks for the pics and impressions JV. I always appreciate your posts. :)

you're welcome, schmittie! going on an overnighter tomorrow...haven't decided yet if i'll bring both to continue the chop-off...the guys are bringing booze so it can get dicey, haha.

JV, Great post, pictures, and review. Very helpful in helping me to decide...............Um, well, at least you convinced me that I want all of them, still can't decide which I "need".

Off to sell some thing to pay for a Gransfors purchase.

Alright I'm sold. I have been in the market for a while for a GB but cant find the SFA anywhere. Sold out for months from pretty much everyone and everywhere (if you have one for trade or sale PM me!) I've been playing with a CRKT Kangee hawk lately and while it's pretty bad ass for $40 it leaves a lot to be desired. Thank you for the review if I can find a hunters axe I think I will try it out!

Way to revive a 3+ year old thread....

Nice review on the Hunter. Helped me decide to give it a try. Thanks.

thanks, guys!

i actually sold off all my gb recently except one - the scandinavian forest axe, for some serious chopping if i ever need to. i just found myself chopping and splitting wood a lot less now than before...for light duty use i actually found the h&b forge shawnee tomahawk ideal. here's a comparison i did with the sfa: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1242364-another-day-hike-tomahawk-vs-axe.

i've been using it for over a year now and it's what i use if i need to chop and split just enough to start a fire and rely on a saw (my hands down favorite is the bob dustrude quick buck saw) to process the rest of the wood. upsides are it's made in the usa, a lot lighter and way cheaper at $60'sh.

thanks to bear the dog for introducing me to h&b :)

I think that I read on a previous post that you stated that the Shawnee's handle was too thin for you. You also had the Medium camp axe if I remember correctly. If I am correct, how would you compare the two? I've been jonesing for a Medium Camp Axe for a while now!

I have a GB Outdoors axe. I worry that the H&B Shawnee will be too similar.

Thanks!

the skinny handle issue was with the ladies' tomahawk...it took a couple of trips to get used to it but after splitting to make kindling-sized pieces (starting with 1-1.5" diameter max and splitting them as small as i can mostly for emberlit use) it's much less tiring to use it for that than the shawnee...basically, i prefer to use the shawnee for open camp fire prep and the ladies' for day hike/emberlit fire prep.

bear the dog has the medium camp axe and i've tried it once years ago so i don't remember much about it though.

from the looks of it the gb outdoor axe will be a better splitter than the shawnee but a two-handed swing it's a bit cramped so i'm betting the shawnee will out-chop it since it can keep up with the sfa in that task.

Funny to see this post again. I got quite a few axes last year and I was kind of prissy about the sand and stones in the park supplied campfire wood near by. They are just axes, we get old and die, so just use the bloody things. Now I just grab whatever turns my crank, toss it in the vehicle and go. Thanks for the write up JV.
