gransfors bruks maul failure

I have had the large GB maul for over a decade. Also their wedge. While I haven't split seven cords per year, the maul has performed well for me and survived a few misses in which I hit the protective metal collar on the wedge.

I hope the replacement serves you well.

yes, lodgepole pine.
i guess i forgot to update as i said i would do.
i recieved the new maul in a matter of 2 1/2 weeks. it would have been sooner but they were waiting on a shipment from the factory.
so i got one that came straight from sweden. shes beautiful and razor sharp. the first one was just a fluke, the wood failed. it was literally in pieces inside the head.
as i said in an post above; the CS was excellent. they were as helpful as they could be and kept me updated regularly via email.
you pay for that 20yr warr. and i this case it was worth it. they keep their word and stand behind their products. i will be a customer for life...

And you will read constant complaints about GBs cost. You get what you pay for. I, for one, will keep on buying and using their products.

Well, a decade later and this is a post I was looking for. I overshot a strike with my BRAND NEW GB maul, only like 30-50 chops in, and the head just snapped right off. I hit hard, but not full power.
I'm not proud of the the overstrike, but they happen! I've never broken a maul, and have chopped dozens of cords. I wonder if that metal. Collar is a stress-riser for the handle??
I was amazed. $300 for a maul, and I break it with less effort than any other? I've used wood, plastic, fiberglass, and metal handled mauls - no failures. I really don't know what to make of it... But I have to say I see the wisdom in the idea of expensive axe but cheap maul...

I did like the maul a lot. Heirloom quality, beautiful feel and finish. Should I try another one I wonder?? Maybe a fluke?

Probably just a bad handle. Rehang it on a new handle, with good grain orientation, and you should be good. You want straight grain with no run-out. And you want the grain aligned with the direction of your swing. Not crosswise to it.
