Gransfors Bruks SFA Failure

This is probably Murphy involved, a hardness problem ( edge maybe got too hot when sharpening), a cold head ( steel becomes brittle in very cold conditions), a frozen tree, and a botched cut all contributed to the failure. It looks like you use a belt grinder to sharpen the axe is that correct? Belt grinders can harden an edge to a point where it becomes very brittle
Send it back under warranty

The tree was already fallen & my friend was chopping it, maybe as you said the swing was past the target i really don't know.

Not being critical of you just inquiring. Either way send it back, if the warranty and your request are reasonable you will receive a new tool.

Without a doubt a bad heat treat, there was probably a hairline crack in the edge of the blade just waiting for the right cicumstance's to break it off,it happen's

Yea, there very well could have been a crack there not visible to the naked eye. It may not have ever broken had it not been those extreme cicumstances you mentioned. Im sure they will make good on it. We beat our tomahawks on seasoned hardwood before they leave here, hard....Even with that you just never know..If we ever have one break(knock on wood, not yet:D) under normal conditions we'll replace it. Thats all you can do..

They're sending you money to cover freight? That is perhaps the best warranty I've ever heard of!

Even better than I expected. Thanks for sharing.

Glad you are able to get a replacement. By the way, my comments about warming the axe in extreme cold was not to pass judgment or infer user error. I was just making a suggestion that may avoid future problems.

This is the second time of hearing, "warm your axe in your pants".
This must be up there with "SNIPE HUNTING"
Hand forge is hand forge.........hard sh_t!
You may have a bad heat treat axe head. This happens in large productions. Warranty will take care of you.

That's something that's always bothered me about even the best warranties out there, that the consumer is expected to ship faulty goods back on their own dime.

I've been doing the ol' GB vs. Wetterlings debate dance lately and this will probably nudge me toward GB in the end. But wouldn't Wetterlings be covered under the same warranty since it's owned by the same parent company?

From what I've read they are kept 2 separate companies although they are owned by the same fellow.
