Amazing knife...

It IS one of those "love it or hate it" designs. Guess which one I am? :) It's a radical design, with a radical approach to folders. Pure genius if you ask me...

I like it a lot. Probably because I handled one at Blade West and the Vegas Classic. That is a really slick little mechanism. The blade can be opened and closed using the thumbstuds or by using the toggle lock mechanism. It is that little button looking thing on the side of the handle. I think it is a clever little device using levers that connect the lock and the blade at all times. I know this insn't clear at all. That's because I don't know how to really explain it. It is definitely something new and interesting.

No question, from a styling standpoint, it's a design that is 'busy'. I might even call it butt-ugly. ;) That's also why I like it!

It looks like a prop knife for a Star Trek series.

I want one!! :p

Now, I know you mean that as a compliment, but I dissagree! I think it looks marginally "space age", but I don't like fantasy knives or the knives that try to look "futuristic". The Toad looks high-tech for sure, but I don't think it looks too busy or Star Trek-ish. but hey, at least you like it! :)

Wow... I think that might just be one of the most beautifully ugly knives i've ever seen...

it's perfect....

How do you like the floating stop pin design?

Also, how well does the pocket lip work? Do you have trouble clipping it to a pocket by just sliding it in?

I've been wanting one of these but had some minor hang up's - nice to see someone actually bought one that I can bounce questions off of!

cpirtle- the stop pin seems to be standard, like any of the liner locks I've owned. In the review I did, I mention sending back the folder to the makers because the ambidextrious clip mounts were slightly mis-aligned, so I can't look over the knife right now. Check out the schematic he sent me:

You can see the stop pin here as well:

Keep in mind that I got one of the couple of prototypes that accidentally went out with misaligned clip holes. This is something that is no longer an issue (and if you do get one, they will replace/fix it for free).

The pocket clip was tight out of the box. It was a little difficult to slide it on and off my pocket. That's the beauty of their design though; I just grabbed a hex wrench and adjusted the tension. Individual owners can adjust the tension as desired.

Thanks for the reply John.

I'm pretty sure this one has their floating stop pin as well, but could be wrong. Here is the description of it from their web page.

Shock Absorbing Stop Pin
The speed with which the blade can be opened led to the development of the shock absorbing blade stop. By referring back to the cross section drawing it can be seen how this innovative blade stop works. The stop pin floats freely, captured between the handle frames by an enlarged center diameter. Two grooves cut in the small diameter near the ends of the stop pin retain O-rings made of a cast urethane elastomer. The resiliency of the urethane O-rings cushions the blow of the fast traveling blade as it collides with the stop pin.

Thanks for the additional info on the clip.

This definitey looks like a cool knife!

Did Grant have any in stock when you were looking?

Hmmm... that is very cool. It's like the Hawk team has re-thought every element of their folders. I wasn't aware of the floating stop pin on the TOAD. I wonder if this means I can flick this knife open as much/hard as I want without fear of damage. I know Grant lurks around this forum- hopefully he'll step in and tell us more about this stop pin of theirs.

Yes, when I was about to order, they did have several TOADs basically ready to go. They have a nice selection of G-10 colors and annodized frames (I was very tempted to get the black frame), which they will put together for you on request.

Just a note: I know it may sound otherwise, but I have no afiliation with this company. I just really like what I see coming out of their shop, and want to spread the word...
