My wound care nurse was put today to do a dressing change. I had an unopened box of supplies and he mentioned needing a knife. I was standing next to the box and, without really thinking, I pulled out my Manix 2 XL and sliced it open. Well, he immediately says, "Wow, that's not your normal pocket knife," and I silently sighed and thought "Ah, crap," and launched into my bit about how I collect a bit, blah, it's a utility knife, blah.

Well, I read it totally wrong. As soon as I mentioned collecting he asked if I sharpened and pulled out a beat up Smith and Wesson folder and asked if I would touch it up and admired my Spyderco at some length. I sharpened his knife up for him and now I'm thinking I'll pick out a decent folder to gift him as a thank you when we're done with all this nonsense.

Moral of the story? Not everyone out there thinks we're crazy, bizarre as it may be (and completely wrong in my case) some of them even think we're cool! :D

Right on. Some of them out there "get it".

A gift is a great idea. I gifted a non-knife person a griptillian a few years back and he carries it every day.

now that's what I call a pleasant surprise! As an aside, I hope your wound heals up soon.

Thanks! Luckily, one is healed and the other one is supposed to be here for now. Sometimes doctors get the inexplicable urge to poke tubes into your chest. ;)

yeah doctors--real shifty bunch. last week i went to the dentist thinking whatever, you know routine checkup/cleaning etc.

48 hrs later i am sitting in an oral surgeon's chair getting ready to have 4 teeth pulled...man i'll never forget the sounds i heard that day. turns out one wisdom tooth had something called a periapical abcess, two others had fractures on the roots and the last one went because he figured why not save me the trouble later....

talk about docs and their darn urges!!! that one caused me to get my day's calories from cream of wheat for the next 4 days!!

anyways glad your on the mend--you'll be good as new in no time

That is a nice story Insipid. Good to hear one of those about knives out in the wild every once and a while.

I have a buddy who go a boat a couple years ago. He's an up and comer in TV production. If you watch MLB or NHL on TV he has helped you enjoy it. I gave him a Pacific Salt since he got a boat. Turns out he carries it and uses it everyday at work for all sorts of stuff. I recently asked him if he needed it sharpened. He said yes and sure enough the thing was dull as all get out. I gave him a loner Endura since I didn't know when I would get his knife back to him. We connected Monday night and I gave him his knife back and he gave me the loner back. The Endura was covered in tape and other stuff, dull as all get out. It was so nice to see a dirty used knife returned after it had seen a bunch of honest use. Made me smile, right before I cleaned it up and sharpened it back to normal.

Its stories like that, that make carrying a knife worthwhile.

Get better soon

Cool story I.M. - I like hearing about things like that. I too meet knife-friendly folks on occasion (and sometimes weapon- and gun-friendly folks, too). If it's someone who I know I'm going to run into again, I usually gift them a SAK Classic or Cadet or similar next time I see them. I've turned a few novices into collectors! That's one more for our side - hehe!
