I want to have a gray finish on my knives and I've been trying to explore different ways of doing this. I've tried bluing and then rubbing it down and a couple other methods. I don't have any money to go get fancy etching stuff, stupid truck has me broke:). So what's your method? Pics please if you have them!

Are you talking about acid and stonewash finish? It can be achieved pretty cheap from what I understand.

If you're using carbon steel then simple vinegar will give you a grey finish. Clean with acetone or alcohol, leave in vinegar for 20 mins or so. Take it out, rub the oxides off and see if its the finish you like. If you want it darker then put it in for longer.

Heat Apple cider vinegar and wipe the blade until it is dark enough for you if its carbon. Bead blast and then wire brush on a grinder for stainless. Ferric chloride works on stainless also.

Ok, thank you all! I'm using carbon steel, no stainless. I've used mustard before because of the vinegar, so I'll try just straight vinegar next. Thank you!

And question for Shane... I love the looks of that mossy trail knife you make. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me copying it? Mine will be much different, and much worse I guarantee:). I won't be trying to sell it, it will just be a personal knife.

I was taught by my father in law how to French gray. He was a master gun maker. Heat the blade to 400. Cold blue/ tumble with medium OA

Go for it Nic. I don't mind. It's a simple drop point and a good cutter.

Thank you! Simple, yet elegant. Mine will by no means come close to measuring up to yours, but I'm excited to try to make it the best I can!
