I am sure that someone has probably covered this, but does anyone out in Fourm Land have a picture of a gray Spyderco Matriarch? Also, just being curious, did they make any other colored handles besides gray and black in this model?

Go here for a picture of a G-10 Civi and a Grey Matriarch.

IIRC the grey was made for South Africa and Israel sales. Someone on the forum found out about them and after a LOT of pleading Sal offered to make some for BF members. 200 were made for the collector cluban 2-300 for BFC members. These were sold ONLY to BFC members. There were some left, Sal limited sales to three each, that were sold by dealers to the LEO comunity.

These were the deal of a lifetime, IMHO. I wish that sales were't limited at the time. I would of liked a few more to put up for the Granddaughter and any more to come.
 
The Matriarchs for Israel and South Africa had black handles. The grey handled ones were a special run of 500 for the BladeForums members.
 
Didn´t only the earlier (protos) have black handles?

The grey handle on mine is almost black so could the grey one have been misstaken for a black and therefore the SA and Israeli Matriarchs where in fact grey?

I´m very curious so please bring some light into this matter.

The gray were definitely a special run, as Mike had said, and the SA knives were black. I'm certain since I traded one of my gray ones to a friend from SA for a black. IIRC, the gray run may not have sold out to BF members & some made it into regular distribution channels.
 
It is a dark gray, butt you can definitely tell the difference if you have a black FRN handle next to it. I just added a picture of a black and a gray Matriarch in the same picture. Hopefully you can see the difference in it.

Found this thread in the archives. In it Sal says the black handles were scheduled for SA and Israel. The gray was exclusively for the forum members.

Just one more question. How do you see the difference between black Matriarchs made today and the ones that where sent to SA and Israel?

The ones that are made today have the David Boye(sp) cutout in the lock.

Brian is right - after a lot of clamoring for the Matriarch, some members backed out when it came time to buy and missed out on a great self defense EDC with collector value, so they had to go to regular distribution. Oh well, I got mine and carry it every day. Chinook is also correct - I made the neck sheath for the BF Matriarch and still get some orders for them. They are great for deploying the blade right on the draw.

I've got both the gray (three of them, in fact) and the black - the new version, with the Boye cutout. Great folders. My wife and I carry them every day (she's got her own black handled model).
