Great clearance price on a Case Trapper...

I had purchased a Case Hobo in amber bone a couple/few years ago from one of the big box sporting goods stores. I live in the Syracuse NY area, and I must travel about 25 miles (to just outside of Auburn NY) to visit this store, and it's the only store that I know of in the area that carries a nice selection of Case knives (actually having a separate display case just for their Case brand knives). When I purchased the Case Hobo, I noticed it had been made in 2007, so even though they have a nice selection of Case, they don't seem to move very fast. On the other hand, their selection of much cheaper imported knives seem to have a good output in sales for them. Just another obvious sign that the lower priced imported knives are not only here to stay, they will be the final nail in USA factory produced traditional knives. By the way, that Case Hobo I purchased from them is a real beauty, and a facinating gadget. Case may not be the most expensive American traditional knives, but my collection has some of their representations that place them as one of my favorites (a tough choice for me between them and some of my Queens/Schatt & Morgans). But then again, having both flavors shuts down that dilemma, lol! 😉

Even with the Hobo having a more complex overall build requirement (being that it comes apart into three separate pieces and all), it still has a nicely centered knife blade and fork 👍😎👍

I've noticed that the further I travel into rural areas, the more traditional pocket knives I'll still find at big box stores, and basic small hardware stores. MD/PA/DE/WV/VA.

A few years back, a sales clerk at the Bass Pro Shop in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina said they sell so many Case knives they can't keep 'em in stock.

Pocketknifejimmy,

May I ask what knife that is to the left of the peanut?

I simply must get one! :)

I went to the same big box hardware store again today to pick up some brass plated decorative nails. I decided to check out their limited knife selection again, figuring why not, I'm there anyway. Anyhow, behind a CRKT knife they had there, was one Case brand Peanut model with amber bone scales. Yup, you guessed it, it was also on sale. They had it marked at a clearance price of $22 and some change before taxes (down from their original $45 price). The only other peanut I have is a Colt branded Chinese made version, and for this bargain price, now this Case. I did scavenge through the rest of the knives to see if any other deals were to be had... But I think I picked up their last two Case knives (and they only costing me $38 plus tax). Maybe they are no longer going to carry Case knives. It may explain their low prices, them possibly doing away with carrying the brand altogether.

I indiscriminately just buy whatever I like in terms of slippies. Case happens to have a few favorite patterns. Copperlocks and mini trappers to name a few!

I love when I find a bargain on a knife in a "non knife" store. Scored a couple smoking deals on SAK's recently.

It's my favorite knife of all time ☺ I will explain... I picked up this made in Japan knife somewhere over 20 years ago. It was in my pocket for only a few hours, when I showed it to my mom, and she had nothing but praise for it's small size and appearance. So, I gave it to her right on the spot... She was mom, and I loved her very much. Anyhow, a few years ago she passed away after a long battle with cancer. My daughter volunteered to help my father sort some of her things a few weeks after, and she found this tucked away in a box with other obvious momentos of hers. My daughter knew I would like it, and with dad's blessing, brought it over to me. Yup, that same knife I gave to her, and that she cherished, was now back in my hands... And now it meant the world to me, because mom cherished it after I gave it to her. That's the story of my little knife ☺

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother's passing. This is a great example of how a "material thing," in this case a knife, can become more than a "material thing." Thank you for sharing. That's a true treasure.

That's a wonderful, moving story, PKJ! I can see why it's your favorite knife!:thumbup:

Jimmy,

I like the trapper you got at such a great price. What model number is that?

Thanks,

No trappers, but scored this one at my local home improvement store today... on clearance of course. I don't know what a like more, a beautiful knife, or a great deal on a knife.

Being that it's packaged in clamshell form, and likely specifically for the particular hardware chain store, the info on the packaging is not as usual Case offers. I believe it is still considered a 6254 model trapper with (in this case) a satin stainless steel blade and jigged brown delrin scales. If you google Case 00019, you should find it.
Hope that helps 😎

The packaging makes me think that it's the same chain of stores that you got yours from. My SodbusterJr was with the black delrin, the yellow looks nice!.. If you don't mind my asking, what was it's clearance price?

Case peanuts and medium stockmen were on clearance at the big box in my neighborhood; I took one of each at about $17 each. They were also clearing out Victorinox Recruits at $7.49; I was glad to take their last two off their hands.

The clamshell packaging on the Case knives is some of the most impenetrable I have found. That crenellated plastic resists easy entry with any knife. Almost worth paying full retail to get them in a box.

True story on the clamshell packaging. It's the toughest I have ever handled... Talk about overkill, lol!

I went to 9 stores across 3 states and got the Victorinox Recruit (for my son), the Case Trapper, a couple of Case Peanuts (blue bone and amber bone) a Sodbuster (yellow delrin), 4 or 5 Case 225LS (synthetic lockbacks for $5.99!) and a couple of Made in China Bucks.

I miss the Case box, but at these silly prices, I'll take the time to open that clam shell every time. BTW, the trick to those clamshells is to carefully separate the top, then they pull apart surprisingly easily.
