Great coat for outdoors?

Take a look at Filson coats. Exexpensive but Very good quality. I have 3

of their coats. They've been make clothes since 1897. C.C. Filson out of

Seattle. Their coats last for generations not years!

Dang I shouldnt have become a member of this site and then looked at this thread. I took a look at the Filson stuff and wouldnt you know I love the looks of their coats, now to explain to my wife why I want a 300 dollar jacket..not to mention all the knives I now want/need. ;)

Which one do you suggest? You have a link to the exact coat/jacket?

I've worn this for two winters and it's really nice. There's also a hood you can buy that snaps on the collar, I might get one this winter just to try it out. The pockets are nice and big, so when you've got gloves on you don't have to struggle to get stuff in and out, and you can drop tools in there as you're working without too much fuss.

Get a thick wool blanket, or two of those army ones and make yourself a poncho, worked for cowboys and gauchos down in ushuaia/patagonia/bariloche still wear them.

I use either my Carhartt or my Driza-Bone if it is wet.

Can't find a picture of the Drize-Bone coat but it's similar to the Carhartt. It's only waist length and has a fleece liner which zips in. The hood is detachable which is a plus for me as I like to stow it in a pocket when moving through woods.

Filson, Woolrich, Carhartt...all a little too spendy for a kid working odd jobs during his summer, I'm gonna stick to surplus. I need to balance the expenditure with my knife and gear addiction :o

I bought a like new Woolrich coat with large game pocket on sleezebay for $15.00 shipped. It did not break the bank.

Last year I got a Berne (cheaper carhart ) field jacket style coat. It is lined and comfy. Really liked it so I got another in moss color. Buckskin for work, mossy for outdoors. Picked up locally at a farm supply store for about $40 I think. Also has optional snap on hood

I have a few coats, more and more I just prefer a fleece liner and a gtx or waterproof shell. The Arctyrex Alpha jacket is my go to coat because it's so light weight and water proof but I also wear a Woolrich Elite for dirtier jobs or when it's really cold.

Not GTX but waterproof (may need a touch up w/ campdry)

Military surplus places should have both the fleece and the army gtx jacket fairly cheap.
