Just to let you guys know if you're interested...

Kmart is selling the Buck 471 Diamondack on clearance for 5 dollars. I think it's a pretty good deal for a good knife that is also good for the kitchen.

Go check out the knife section cause I've seen them at several locations. If it isn't marked down, just ask the person in the sporting goods area to check on it.

Also, I have a question regarding the steel used in the knife. Is the quality on it lower than other knives that Buck makes? Meaning, even if the steel is the same as on a 119, is the process to make it different causing it to be not good? What exactly are the drawbacks and weaknesses if any?

Thanks a lot!

Im curious as well to the quality of the steel in the taiwan and chinease bucks compared to the us models.I have not used any of the imported bucks but I have sharpened a diamond back for a friend,it seemed to sharpen about the same to me.He had dressed 3 or 4 deer on the factory edge so I'd say it's a good user for the money,I'll have to see if there on sale in my area.
LOTO

Somewhere I heard that the heat treatment is different on them...I myself don't know how this would affect the steel but maybe someone more knowledgable does...

The only thing that I am wondering about is rust...my particular 471 has already started to rust a bit. It was put through the dishwasher two times and seems to have collected some spots at the point where the blade meets the rubber. Also a few tiny specs on the blade itself. I'm wondering if its an isolated incident or if it will happen to all of them.

I picked up a Buck Approach a few months ago. Made in Taiwan. The 420HC blade seems to just as good as the US made Bucks.

I need to check my local K Mart for a Diamondback.

Remember to take the diamondback to a scanner if it's not labeled. I've seen a bunch that are not marked as reduced but still scan at 5 bucks. The ones that do get labeled don't hang around too long. The price drop happened just last week.

I totally admit I am by no means a metalurgist, and I have also heard it implied online that the heat treat is different for imported Bucks than domestic, but speaking just from personal experience with a decent sample of both, I have not yet been able to tell any difference between Buck's 420HC domestic vs. import.

Thanks confederate...just wondering, have you put any of your buck's through the washing mashine and if so, have they ever started to rust?

Sorry, I just now found that you asked me something. I wasn't ignoring you!

I've never ran a Buck though the washing machine, but I have gotthem wet. Buck's 420HC is VERY rust resistant, in all of mine I have seen 1 that developed spot rust in a few hours, and the majority of opinions was that it was an anomoly.

I also finally hit my local K-Mart today, I got a Diamondback for $5 and a Mantis for $6.

They are 420HC. And to my knowledge Buck sent their heat treatment overseas. In addition, I believe, all overseas knives come back to Post Falls for inspection. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Congrats on the $5 diamondback...great deal, huh? My diamondback started rusting unfortunately. :( but it's still sharp. Is there anything harmful about using a rusty knife to chop food?

Also, what is a mantis? Folding knife?

I think It's a tiller.:D It is a folder. 420HC also.

Not really, just scrub the rust off with an SOS pad. Small spots of rust are not dangerous.

Also, what is a mantis? Folding knife?

Here is a Mantis

Are you saying that even USA made Bucks are sent overseas for heat treatment?

No! Iv'e seen the room, from outside, where they heat treat in Post Falls. But I believe they sent the forumula to the factory overseas. If someone knows better please let me know.

I understand your question now. I made it sound like all heat treatment went overseas. My mistake.:o

Thanks for the heads up guys. I picked up a Diamondback and a Mantis from Kmart yesterday before headding out of town on vacation. I left the Diamondback at home but brought the Mantis with me for my beach and poolside knife. Not a bad little knife for $6!

Messersmith...no problem. Just wanted to share the deal with everyone :)

Just out of curiousity, was the Mantis $6.00? Also, was the diamondback $6.00 or $5.00?
