Warren...you are supposed to be keeping me away from these beauties! ;-)

Nasty...you're the one with the sickness, not me....right? :D :D :D

Arrrghhhh I love that Penknife...holding Semper's horn handled penknife Saturday just put me over the edge...

WoHooo!
Got me onna dem Horny Penknives...
Thanks a million Uncle Bill/Yangdu :D :D :D

I just see more Khuks as justification for the Delta and all of the cool sharpening stuff I have now!

My woodie arrived today (Mamav, I like the way you think!). Great knife, good quality scabbard, *cute* karda and chakma. Maybe I'll give then to my 2 year old nieces...they'd be a perfect fit for them.

Seriously, since I'm going to use the Pen knife on a regular basis, I think I'll open the scabbard and get rid of them...it'd sit much better on the hip and not protrude so much, getting snagged less hiking through the woods.

That's one thing we should cover at next year's Khonvention...rebuilding frogs and scabbards! Maybe we can get Terry Sisco to attend!

I received mine today. Very good, solid little knife (LOL as always at the shift in perspective that HI gives). A few woodchuck tendancies may be showing themselves in me, sparked of course by Pen's villager refurbishment of a while back. As Nasty says, the karda and chakma are pretty small, and my karda noticibly off-center. Oh well, time to figure out how to make my own I guess. Thanks Uncle Bill, Yangdu, and Bura and the gang!

I just got my horn handled Pen-Knife in moments ago. All i can say is... "I have seen the light!". I kind of bought this little guy on a whim. I already have a light razor sharp 12" AK villager and a 12" siru that is a little heavier than the AK. I like them both, but they seem to be "lacking" in some areas. The siru won't chop as well as an AK of equal weight, and the AK is too light to chop as well as I think it should. This is where the mighty Pen-Knife comes in! It is not exactly "perfect" as the brass buttcap is a tad loose, but DANG does this thing chop! A used it in our shop's wearhouse on a wood skid. It reduced it to toothpicks in a matter of minutes, and its not even all that sharp! This is THE one that i'm taking with me in the woods when i go camping in a couple months. Not only is it handy, but it should scare the sheeple too much. If it raises any eyebrows then i'll just tell them that its a tactical spatula for my bacon and eggs:D. Once again, great design Pen, and thanks Uncle Bill, Yangdu, Bura, and the rest!

Thanks,
~Jake

I was thinking of hollow grinding one side of mine so I could use it for a soup spoon...

The PK chops all out of proportion to it's size. It should also make one very impressive skinning knife for that next elk that steps in front of a .308 round.

The design is almost a hybrid bolo knife/Bowie knife with a dose of khukuri tossed in.

All in all, it really does grow on you. For it's size and portability it's is approaching an optimum wilderness survival/hunting knife. Put a saw somewhere on the spine and you'd blow Tom Brown's Tracker Knife out of the water.

do you by chance have a picture of a 12" AK and a pen knife side by side? or have you seen any pictures posted? i did a search and didnt really come up with anything...

and im trying to justify buying it even though i dont have any money....

AFAIC a nice Marble's Woodcraft blows Tom Brown's kay-nife outta the water!!!! :p  ;) :D ;)

And don't sell a really good wide bladed dagger short either. The old timers used to sharpen one side for fine work and the other for heavy work with a more obtuse edge. The only problem with a dagger is that it's hard to pound them through anything with a chunk of wood as it eats the wood up.;)
There's really something to be said for the old trade goods Beaver Tail Dagger that was traded through out the North Country though!!!!:D
I know I would dearly love to have a real one and I might just have one someday.

Too stay on topic....I would like to have a Pen Knife one of these days too.:D

Just put my 12" Villager AK and the Pen-Knife on the scanner (I do not own a DC) - The result is not the best but should give you an idea of a side by side comparrison. It can be seen here:
12"AK, Pen-Knife

The Pen-Knife I own has a very short handle. The AK is a bit lighter and - maybe due to Shers convex edge the better chopper I think (but they are close to each other. The Pen-knife is straighter with a larger belly (ability to stab, dig, skin etc.). Both would do the job, I like the 12"AK better - but do not know why.

thank you :D, with a little photo shopping to get them paralel and lined up, that was exactly what i was looking for :)

having the pen knife next to it makes the 12"ak look like a smaller bas...

definitely interesting...

Some history...

Pan? I concur. I love the Pen's design and style, but the 12 AK by Shanker is more well suited to my use as chopping and dressing out whitetail deer.

The large bladed Pen binds more in the wood for me than does the 12 in AK.

I also prefer the point on the AK for getting into spots that the broader tip of the Pen would not allow.

The Pen seems more "westernized" (if you will allow that expression), which makes sense.

My AK has more weight-forward and thus works better as a chopper for me.

Both lovely tools, though.

Interesting. My Pen knife beats my 12" AK hands down on chopping. I figured the end heavy design and heavier weight. Never binds, but I have a real highly polished convex edge on mine.

But here's 2 people who say the little AK is a better chopper? Wonder if it is a difference in the edge? The way each pen knife/ak is made? Or personal chopping style? Maybe mine is a fluke. It chops like an axe.

I think it's the way it's used...neither better, just according to the way it's used. I'll attest to HD's Pen being a chopper!

That's not to mention the *way* cool Terry Cisco rig with replacement Karda, sharpener and firestarter!

I don't have a 12" AK so I can't compare the two. But the Pen knife I do have is a good chopper and hair shaving sharp thanks to Pen at the MWKK and a little work with my Warren strop. This little knife (can't believe I called a blade this size little :D ) is a winner in my book.

But now I may just have to try a 12" blade.... :)
